1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint
1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Description
This 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint is a cosmetically refurbished example equipped with a twin-cam 1.3-liter four-cylinder and 4-speed manual transmission. The car was purchased new in Italy and driven to Kuwait by the original owner, where it accumulated 60k kilometers before being sold to the second owner in 1967. In 1970, the car was taken to the UK by the second owner and languished as an unfinished project until being bought by the 3rd owner in 2013. The car was returned to running condition and participated in the 2014 UK Giulietta Registry tour. The previous owner purchased this example shortly thereafter and had it shipped to the US, where a two year cosmetic refresh was undertaken. I bought the car in 2016.
This Alfa Sprint is now being offered with a statement of authenticity from Alfa Storico, a narrative history and photographs from the restoration, and a clean title in my name. The body was disassembled and all the panels stripped to bare metal, and many small dents were removed before the body was refinished in the original Gardenia White.
Original components were preserved during the refurbishment, and chrome bumpers and trim were refinished as-needed. The refurbished factory wheels wear chrome hubcaps and are shod with Pirelli 155/15 tires.
The two-tone interior was fitted with a new headliner and windshield during the restoration. Veglia instrumentation is original, though the tach and speedometer cables are replacement items. Patina can be seen on the gauge bezels and interior hardware. 80,738 km (~50k miles) are shown on the odometer, and total mileage is unknown.
The blue and white vinyl and cloth seat covers were replaced and show little wear. Shoulder harnesses have been fitted. A spare wheel wearing a Vredestein tire is mounted in the trunk along with a jack and new battery.
The 1,290cc twin-cam four is said to be the original unit and was rebuilt prior to the second owner’s purchase in 1967. Work performed at that time included a rebuild of the head and carburetor, and the installation of a new water pump, master cylinder, and starter. The radiator was re-cored. The brake shoes were relined and wheel cylinders relined or replaced as-needed. A new generator, voltage regulator and fuel-sending unit were installed, the Solex carburetor was again rebuilt, and Koni shocks installed all around, by the previous owner. A tune-up and chassis lubrication were performed in 2015, and the oil and filter were changed six months ago.
The underside was cleaned and sprayed with a black rustproofing paint during the refurbishment.
