This 1974 Alfa Romeo Spyder 2000 was purchased in September 2016 from a third party representative in Bedford NY.The vehicle had been stored poorly since 1995 in an open barn or carport in South Hadley, MA.I think that was the second owner who had purchased the vehicle in the late 70’s or early 80’s from the original owner. The vehicle features a 2.0l engine with SPICA fuel Injection, 5-speed manual, and black vinyl seats, and a black top.The car has been repainted at least once in a non-correct color, which is faded, chipped, and has surface rust and rust –thru in several areas.
I purchased the vehicle as a project with the intent of turning it into a safe driver and had no plans to fully restore the car.I started by replacing all the fluids (coolant, eng / trans / rear end, brake / clutch fluid, SPICA pump oil).Fortunately, the vehicle was stored with the radiator in the trunk so there was no worry about water damage to the block. The radiator has been filled with Detrol to prevent future overheating problems.I also changed all of the filters (air, oil, SPICA and both fuel) as well as the spark plugs. I added a new Interstate battery (MTP24F, 800 CAA, 1000 CA, 125 RC) in Jan 2017, which stays on a trickle charger.
Over the next few months, I continued to repair mechanical parts that were too worn to repair or use. This includes: SPICA belt, water pump, brake m.c., clutch servo, rubber brake and clutch lines, brake calipers (4), 2 center exhaust sections, fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel sending unit, fuel nozzle hose, lower front suspension plates, radiator overflow tank, and flasher.I replaced the rubber fuel lines will ethanol compatible lines.
After about a year, I managed to get the car to start and was able to drive it short distances (shown in the first two videos).Since that time, I have tried to get the timing set properly without success (seen in the third video filmed in October 2019).
I put on a new convertible top in April 2017, which is still settling in. The old convertible top fabric had completely dry-rotted while in storage however, it was folded and out of the weather that affected the rest of the car. This kept frame from rusting out and that was only required to treat some light surface rust before putting on the new top.The cover for the top is usable and with the car.
I added the steel wheels and new General Altimax RT46 sized 185/65 R 14 early in 2017, which have less than 20 miles on them. The spare is outfitted with a Bridgestone that came with the vehicle. The Alfa came with Campanolo Turbinas, which come with the car.The jack and lug wrench is the only original tools available.
In the paperwork provided by the previous owner, there is a handwritten note (unfortunately not dated; pictured) that shows an extensive list of work completed most likely before the car was put in storage in 1995. It lists: head gasket, valve grind, guides, oil pan gasket, intake gasket, new exhaust, new clutch & throw-out bearing, new rear springs, both upper transmission seals, speedo cable, tires, flushed cooling system, eng., trans. & rear end fluid changes, new brake pads, new driver window regulator, new front universal joint. There also is a receipt for a new windshield in June 1988.
Inside, the tach, spedo, water temp and fuel gauge work (the water temp and fuel gauge can be seen in the 4thvideo).There is a remote oil pressure gauge under the hood installed by a previous owner, which shows between 40-70 lbs when running. The driver’s headlight only works on Hi, the tail & brake lights work fine but the passenger side tail light lens is cracked. The seats are split and torn but are useable with no springs poking through. The leather shift boot is dried out and the dash has several cracks. The switch hanging down (under the steering wheel) is the heater switch. Both rubber mats are in the car buy the driver is in two pieces. There is no carpet except for in the trunk.
There is a slight oil leak from the engine near the right front, after the car has been running for 5 minutes. The seller has not been able to track down the source.Other that small leak, the engine, transmission and rear end are dry.
Also noted in the second video, there is a slight bearing whine coming from the rear end (possibly wheel bearings or the rear end).Recently, the seller discovered the clutch reservoir was empty and determined that the seals in the clutch m.c., most likely had gotten dry from lack of use. After filling the reservoir and exercising the pedal several times, the there have been no further leaks.
The paint was faded, flaking, had a lot of embedded dirt from the poor storage and had surface rust and rust in several places as well as rust through. The inner fenders, door frames and sills are surprisingly good. The door sills and may have been replaced by a previous owner. The jacking points are all weak.
Shortly after getting the car, I applied Ospho on the surface rust areas (dark spots on body). In June 2019, I decided to wet sand and buff the car in places where the rust had not fully taken hold.He progressively used 400, 1000, 1500, & 2000 grains the buffer with compound (white spots on car) and wax which came out nice, but could be improved.
While the underside is not totally compromised, there are many places of rust-thru and bad repairs with Bondo, that are starting to fail again. However, all of the suspension mounts and suspension parts are in remarkable shape considering the make and time it was built. The floor structure is good enough to enjoy.
Most parts replaced by the seller are included with the car (original fuel tank, original fuel pump, original Bosch flasher etc.), except for the brake calipers, as well as spare filters, several service manuals, and copies of receipts for parts I have bought. The original set of five Campanolo Turbinas plus four extras (nine total) come with the car. There are two ignition keys, one door lock key (small bronze in pictures) and a spare key that the seller has not been able to determine its function.
I have fully attempted to completely describe the car as completely as I can. However, your buying a 46-year-old Italian sports car that most definitely is not a show winner or beauty queen, may squeak & rattle, and not run reliably without a bit of tuning, so BUYER BE AWARE!!!
