1961 AMC American Custom Description

FOR SALE: 1961 Rambler American Convertible - 3 speed manual, rare factory power steering, rebuilt 200 OHV six cyl. only 35,000 ORIGINAL miles.... but the kicker? THIS CAR HAS FACTORY ORIGINAL PAINT AND INTERIOR!
I cannot stress it enough - this car is a true survivor car with original red paint from the factory - it has never been resprayed or touched-up! The interior is also completely original. Look at the photos, it's hard to believe it's not been re-sprayed in 57 years!
Engine was rebuilt (bottom end, and new rings top end) approx.1000 miles ago and has been broken-in properly. Why rebuild a motor with only 35K original miles? It developed a rod knock, and the mechanic said the oil may have become acidic after so many years and eaten away at the bearing. I spent $4000+ to have the engine rebuilt at a very well known & respected machine & repair shop in Mountain View California. Receipts come with the car.
I bought this car from a picker/middle man who got it from the original, granny owner. She only drove the car on weekends in the summer, and it was garaged the rest of the time, and it shows. The car is dry and clean as a whistle. No rot, cancer or rust, only very minor surface corrosion, scrapes or dings. Bottom is so dry and solid!
I could go on about this car, but will let the pictures do the talking. These Ramblers were "throw-away" cars only expected to last 10 years or so - finding an orig. paint survivor, and a convertible no less, is absurdly rare.

I have over $16,000. invested in this car incl. the motor rebuild, so I'm starting at that price, but will consider reasonable offers.
You've heard the expression "it's only original once" - this is your chance to get a true survivor granny convertible just in time for spring. This car is approaching 60 years old!! Astounding it has lasted this long in this condition.
It comes with its original Rambler key coffin, and owners manual! It also comes with the full size Technical Service Manual. It's as clean a car as you will ever find. Just look at the driver's door panel in the photosto get an idea of how clean and original this car is - you're looking at a 57 year old factory door panel... it's SICK!

I saw arepaintedAmerican convertible sell at Mecum auctions for $22,000. This car is priced to sell, and I will even consider offers.
It is a turn-key car. Runs and drives great. It even still has its original, correct trim gas cap! Rare factory power steering! (Power steering leaks a bit, but works well.) I had the front end serviced and the trunions are in great shape and re-greased. Tires are excellent, rims were repainted at some point, and this car runs well. Comes with spare carbs, hubcaps and a few doo-dads I collected for it along the way. California YOM plates stay with me, but might be available for purchase separately. Everything works, including the courtesy lights. Radio was working but quit recently. Convertible top is electric and goes down, but struggles to go up on its own. Top motor and cylinders are fine, but needs fluid added. I will attempt to get it working better before sale - in the 6 years I have owned it, I have not had the top up even once! First time I put it up was for the photos. Top material is likely replaced, and is clean and white, with clear plastic rear window. Comes with original top boot! Interior is all orig. with only a seam split where the driver sits, and a small spot on the corner of the passenger's seat back corner. I believe the carpet was added, I think these cars came with rubber floor covering originally, but I have not confirmed. Rear bumper has a ding on driver's side, but I have a straight bumper (needing re-plating) that goes with the car, but I left the original, it's part of the car's history and patina.
Have a look at all the gaps... the doors shut clean, straight and easy, (not sagging) and body panels have never been off, the car retains its straight, factory assembled lines, openings and gaps, just beautiful.
This car is a realCREAM PUFF! If you ever wanted an adorable, early 60s convertible, now's your chance. Original paint survivor cars are soaring in popularity over restored cars... you won't find a better, more original example of a Rambler American convertible. What can you buy for this price that's anywhere near this cool, AND a convertible?? Seriously. This car may be offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this ebay sale page at any time.Overseas buyers, I can help arrange transport to the port of Los Angeles.
Pick-up only in So. Cal, but I will help arrange transport for the new buyer. This car is sold AS IS, WHERE ISno warranties or guarantees implied or implicit. I urge you to come see this car in person before buying or making an offer.
