1963 AMC Rambler American 440 H Description

1963 RAMBLER AMERICAN

440 H

Original 1963 Rambler American 440 H two door hardtop. A little over 10,000 440H cars built, when did you see one last? This was a one-year only option for this body style. 1964 Americans were a body change year. It appears it still has all its factory sheet metal. Car originally sold new in Dallas on May 20, 1963 (per copy of the original title) to a gentleman in Oklahoma who owned it until 2013. I bought it from the 2nd owner in Arkansas in 2019. Inspected, licensed with a clear title in my name.

Original carb professionally rebuilt so the 138 hp 196 cid OHV engine starts on the first crank and runs smoothly (have video). No excessive engine smoke but engine condition is unknown. Transmission shifts smooth, clutch works fine and the car drives ok-have not had it to highway speeds. Not sure if the Twin Stick overdrive works as I have not tried it. Brakes are weak and need work. Dealer-added AC was installed in 1966 and still functions although system needs charged. Gauges, horn, heater fan all work and the original radio still works. Wiper switch does not work. All components under the hood, including the wiring appear to be factory except for the generator which looks to have a 1966 date code not sure about the starter. Speedometer works, odometer reads 39,597 but actual mileage is unknown.

Car was originally red/white with dark red interior. The second owner painted it and the paint is presentable but not show quality. A color sand could make the paint more presentable. A few imperfections in the body (see photos) but no major rust through visible. No major dents except for the passenger rocker panel, lower front valance and a small dent in the roof (see photos). All trim for the trunk lid and the windshield and some of the fasteners are with the car. The roof pillar emblems are included. Check out the photos of the lower rear quarter panels where they attach to the lower rear valance. Visible rust is confined the front frame rails see photos) an easy patch repair. There is rust on the driver?s side rear frame rail as well. No visible rust-through in the trunk, floorboards cowl or firewall. Windshield is cracked and needs replaced. Remaining glass appears to be original. Factory/dealer installed rear view mirrors have the ?R? Rambler script. Bumpers and chrome have typical pitting in places.

Second owner re-upholstered the interior in a red. Very presentable but not the original pattern. Carpet is new as well and the door sill plates are original. Original headliner is sagging and the padded dash is cracked and sun-faded. Console and shifter are original. Console could use freshening up

Original wheels, jack and 440H hubcaps are included as are two keyed door locks, new radiator hoses, door, trunk and cowl weather strip, motor mounts and miscellaneous original used parts.

Some elbow grease and TLC gets you a rare little driver. This is a 57 year old car and there may be issues I haven't seen, so look closely at the pictures or arrange an inspection, ask questions before you bid as there is no warranty either express or implied. Bring a trailer as it needs work before it's roadworthy. Will help you or your transporter load it but shipping is buyer's responsibility. Non-refundable $500 due via Pay Pal at close of auction. Email me for more photos and video of engine running.

No time for games-don't bid unless you have the money and want this type of car. Thanks for looking!
