1974 AMC American Motors MATADOR X - 66000 Original Miles - VIN Verified X Model
1974 AMC Matador X Coupe Description
I've decided to sell my Matador X. I've attended shows and cruise-ins on numerous occasions and it garners lots of attention. Many older guys remember Bobby Allison driving a Penske prepared Matador coupe in the mid-70's where he won both Darlington races in 1975. I believe this car is one of the finest true X examples left in existence. I've seen one beauty on YouTube with a 304 engine down in FL and I know of another (a prototype) in Maryland. That's it. No decent X models have come up for sale at all although I have seen a few Barcelonas and other models. My X has it's original 360 engine. The 2 bbl original carb was replaced with a 4bbl Edelbrock by a prior owner. It runs strong. I have a copy of the original window sticker that shows everything the car was equipped with. It was a Washington state car when purchased new and does NOT have air conditioning. I have quite a bit of paperwork from prior owners. The tires have less than 4,000 miles on them and are just two years old.The X was treated to a full exterior restoration 2 winters ago ($7,000 job) and painted in it's original Trans Am Red color. All dings, minor rust spots, scratches were professionally removed. I have photos of the restoration. Trim pieces removed, NOS emblems, the whole thing was done right. The interior door jambs, inside trunk lid, engine compartment were not touched during this process so all original stickers/labels are original. The interior (except for the carpet) is still all original and in good to excellent overall condition. No dash or rear deck cracks, etc... The windows roll up and down freely. The heater/ defroster and fan work well. No issues. All gauges work except the clock. The car is stock right down to the wheels. The AM radio is still there although a tasteful stereo was added back in the early 2000's at a $700 cost. The money in this car is just dumb but hobbies cost $$$. I'll never get back my costs and I understand that. I will explain all the costs and repairs completed via ebay, e/mail or phone. Too much to list. Outside of detailing (that's my thing), all mechanical work was done by professionals. With no X model sales on record at any of the auction houses like BJ or Mecum it is tough to price compared to other examples. The existing book values are very old and now probably inaccurate. I can look at other AMC models for some consideration so that helps. Quality Javelins and AMX models fetch $20,000 - $30,000 and beautifully restored Gremlin X models have been purchased recently in the low teens. I feel that leaves my Matador X somewhere in the middle and I have it priced accordingly. I welcome all inspections. You should come and see the car anyway and just drive it home. (although no a/c may make it too warm). Thanks for looking and I hope the future owner is out there reading this right now.
