1959 Austin Healey 3000 Description

The production of the Austin Healey 3000 Mark I began in March of 1959 and continued through March 1961. The 3000 was an improvement on the 100/6 model. Not only did it go faster with a new top speed of 112 miles per hour due to a larger 6 cylinderengine (2912cc) and a revised cam it also now was equipped with Girling front disc brakes. This particular Healey was made in May 1959 and was dispatched to San Francisco in November of 1959 and ultimately sold in the spring of 1960. This car was obviously well taken care of and has original parts such as fasteners, clamps and nuts a bolts throughout. No rust and no accident repairs are apparent. Very straight bodypanels and dooralignments.Body, trim and chrome are all in excellent shape. This car has no rust and the body is as straight as it was when it rolled off the assembly line in the Abingdon plant in England. Door gaps are perfect and aluminum fender beads are in excellent shape. It has had one respray many years ago and has very few minor chips that have been touched up. Its not prefect but for a car that was painted in the 80's and has been stored inside it looks remarkably good. Many people prefer an older paint job since any poor body work would have shown up versus a new paint job that may be covering up rust with bondo.
Interior has been upgraded to Concourse standards with the optional Gray Leather with red piping by John Wilson owner of Healey Lane Restorations in Oregon. The leather and color was an option for the Colorado Red Healeys of this year.
Mechanically the car has been maintained to the highest degree. Lights, horn, turn signals, fuel gauge, generator, tach. wipers, all work as they should with the exception of the speedometer which does work but reads fast. Many receipts from the car's early years have been retained. Here is a partial list of new or rebuilt items:
- New hubs (4) with the original knockoffs
- Hydraulics are upgraded with Silicone brake/clutch fluid
- Balanced rear brake drums
- Rebuilt swivel axels
- Rebuilt original rear springs
- Rebuilt original shocks
- New wiring harness [British Wiring ]
- Sidecurtains are original reconditioned to Concourse standards
- Original chrome replated
- New Robbins top with original frame in excellent condition
- Windscreen was replaced but original was kept also
- Stainless steel exhaust
Engine numbers matching and original.
- Replaced freeze plugs, timing chain, tensioner, rear oil seal, lighten flywheel
- Rebuilt starter & generator.
- Spin on filter[original included]
- Original radiator R&R with sleeved thermostat installed. No over heating problems.
Original 4 speed with electric overdrive transmission comes with the car, currently the car comes equipped with the fully synchronized Smitty Kit 5 speed Toyota transmission. Having driven Big Healeys of all types this transmission swap is absolutely wonderful. Shifts are quick and precise and you still have an overdrive. The installation of newer transmission is done in a way that allows original transmission to be re-installed with ease and no permanent alterations were done.
This lovely Healey was driven primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Sierra Mountain Range. This car was not only a fantastic car to drive through the curvy Hwy 49 in the Gold Country it was also perfectly at home on long trips all the way up to Canada for Healey events.

I will be adding a video of the engine running and me driving the car through the gears etc. Oil pressure and temps are as they should be. If you would like additional photos offrame and suspension I can email them to you. Some of the parts such as the brake fluidreservoir and front suspension components have been powder coated black so they hold up better to wear and tear of normal driving. The silver painted 72 spoke wheels come with the car in addition to the chrome spoke wheels that are mounted in the photos. There are extra parts that come with the car too such as water pump andextra mirrors etc.

I took 40 more photos of the car today. That makes close to 100 photos of the car. The new ones are brakes, suspension, frame, wheel wells and mostly things under the car. I did notice one very small spot where there isstarting to show signs of rust under passenger door and I included that photo as well. Some parts of the frame are clean and shiny other parts show road grime. I just got tired of wiping it down. For the most part the underside is very clean, not concourse but straight and clean. They are on another website google bugeyepartsphoto/albums/1959-austin-healey-3000-bt7
