1935 Austin Niooy Description

The Austin Nippy is a sporty variant of the legendary Austin 7 manufactured in the United Kingdom from 1934 to 1937 by the Austin Motor Company, LTD and is a very rare car in today’s collector marketplace, especially in the United States.

Founded in the early years of the 1900’s, the company primarily produced large cars until the outbreak of World War I and when auto production resumed following the war continued with that practice. Sir Herbert Austin saw the need for a smaller, economical vehicle as an alternative to the cyclecars and small automobiles of the car and, against the wishes of company officers and financiers, proceeded with plans for what became the Austin 7 in 1920 with his personal funds. Taking design and mechanical ideas from what he felt were among the best in the industry, when the Austin 7 debuted to the public in 1922 it became the United Kingdom’s equivalent of the Model T Ford in the United States. While only 2,300 were sold in the first full year the Austin 7 was offered, by the time production ceased in 1939 the company had built 290,000 cars and vans in a variety of body configuration and had licensed production to companies all over the globe, most of whom designed their own bodies for the vehicles.

The Nippy was produced from 1934 to 1937 in very limited quantities. With a curb weight of 1,036 pounds, the two-seater was powered by a 749cc Austin in-line four-cylinder engine with a four-speed manual transmission. Top speed was to 65 miles per hour. The Nippy had drum brakes front and rear and proved to be a dependable vehicle especially in and around urban areas. Based on production data gleaned from various sources, experts place the total Nippy production over the three-year run at 682 cars.

This 1935 Austin Nippy bears signs of an obvious older restoration but does not appear to have been modified to any degree with all essential systems intact. The red paint on the body is contrasted by the black interior and wings (fenders for our American friends) and while not concours quality is certainly presentable. This vehicle has been in the portfolio of the present owner for over 10 years and been stored in a humidity-controlled environment during his ownership. While all Nippy models are rare, this left-hand drive model is exceptionally hard to find. Marque experts estimate that perhaps as many as 225 Nippy models exist today with the vast majority of them found in the UK.

These vehicles have been part of static displays for long periods of time, in some cases for decades, and are subject to the flaws and imperfections consistent with that.
