Offered for sale is an exceptional, extremely original, 50k original mile, effectively one owner Southern California 1988 BMW M6, finished in desirable and menacing Black (Schwarz #086) over Grey Nappa Halfline leather. The car was ordered new by Mr. Josef Schneider, a BMW factory trained mechanic who opened the first BMW dealership and service center in Orange County, CA in 1970. He later decided to focus solely on service, opening and operating Schneider Motors in Anaheim, CA until his retirement in the late 1990s. Ordered straight from the factory as a favor, the M6 was Schneider’s personal weekend car until his passing last year, and he used it sparingly, always ensuring that it was meticulously maintained and well cared for. His son inherited the car and would have loved to have kept it, but with limited garage space he decided it should go to someone that would show the same reverence to the car as his father had for nearly thirty years, and we were fortunate enough to acquire it from him earlier this summer on the condition that we find it a good home.

Cosmetically the car is in excellent condition, the Black finish retaining excellent depth and luster, marred only by the most negligible of imperfections (a few small touched up rock chips on the front valence and hood), none of which are significant enough to appear in the photographs. The body is entirely straight with factory consistent panel fits and gaps, showing no evidence of any accidents, which is corroborated by the entirely clean CARFAX report. All of the factory SIGLA glass and original rubber is in excellent condition, as is the chrome trim, and the factory cross spoke alloy wheels are in excellent original condition, although the original roundel center caps are showing slight fading (easily replaced, should that be the next owner’s preference. The interior too is in excellent original condition, the Grey leather seats never re-dyed or repaired and showing only the minimal wear typical of a well cared for, 50k mile example. The interior panels and carpets are in excellent original condition, as is the headliner and dash, which is free of any cracks or warping. Always a garaged Southern California car, it’s devoid of any rust and remains entirely unmodified – radio, wheels and all – somewhat uncommon for E24 M6s. Most U.S. spec E24 M6s were relatively well optioned, and there actually weren’t that many options to begin with. This car’s options include: Halfline Nappa leather interior, cross spoke alloy wheels, air conditioning, rear air conditioning and storage unit, power front seats with driver-side memory, heated front seats, power sunroof, cruise control, rear sun shade and an onboard computer, all of which are fully functional.

As the sparingly used personal car of a BMW factory trained mechanic, this M6 is unsurprisingly in excellent mechanical condition. Upon our purchase we had Kurt Kimball of Granny’s Garage (our local BMW specialty mechanic) comprehensively go through the car to ensure that it would be in effectively turn-key, “needs nothing” condition. Aside from basic service, Granny’s flushed and bled the brake system, replaced the master cylinder, replaced the oil seals at the rear of the transmission and replaced the hood struts. We’re happy to report that compression is excellent across all cylinders (1-180, 2-185, 3-180, 4-180, 5-185, 6-185), the car is completely dry and free of leaks, the braking system is excellent, the transmission shifts smoothly and precisely and all of the electricals work as they should. The car starts effortlessly, idles consistently and pulls with grin-inducing force through each of the transmission’s gears. A PPI detailing the car’s condition and with “no mechanical recommendations” listed is on file and we’ll happily forward it upon request and Kurt would likely be willing speak with any truly serious buyers. We have a deep affinity for many of the European GT cars of the era, but in our humble opinion neither the Porsche 928, Mercedes 560SEC, nor the Jaguar XJS hold a candle to the sheer enjoyment that the driver feels from behind the wheel of the M6, which, in addition to their iconic styling, is a big part of why they’ve quickly become investment grade cars over the past few years, surpassing all but their outrageously expensive 928 GTS peers in value by double, if not more.

As anyone who’s been in the E24 M6 market can attest, finding a low mileage, mechanically excellent, original example is no small feat, especially if they’re not priced offensively. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire what is undoubtedly one of the best examples on the market, checking all the important boxes: always meticulously cared for, mechanically excellent, cosmetically gorgeous, entirely unmodified, desirable livery, clean CARFAX report, glowing PPI report and an excellent, one Southern California owner provenance.
