Background
The 1984-1991 BMW 3 Series, known generationally as the E30, is the one model more than any other that earned BMW the Ultimate Driving Machine reputation. E30s are one of our specialty vehicles at Glen Shelly Auto Brokers. The E30 Touring was the pet project of BMW engineer Max Reisbock. He literally built the first E30 touring out of a wrecked 323i in his garage after work--it was so good that BMW put it into production (with a few minor changes). The E30 Touring started a legacy of sporty BMW wagons that remains to this day. All late-model tourings were spec'd with the 325 suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes. The extra pillars added rigidity over the Coupe and Sedan and there is slightly more rear weight bias, giving it superb handling characteristics. Fold down rear seats, shadowline trim, and Euro headlights make the Touring one of the most exclusive and sporting E30s. The U.S. market never got the Touring, but they are legal now, thanks to the 25-year exemption. Most were subjected to harsh climates and daily duty, thanks to their increased utility. Rust in the rear hatch is a common issue, making dry climate history an important consideration regarding the country of origin. This and a clean body are the most important factors in finding a touring. Factory air conditioning is even more exclusive, as it was nearly impossible to find in a Touring. The ultimate Tourings were those fitted with M Technic kits. These were either dealer installed or ordered from the factory as such.
Summary
This UK market Touring came to us from a private collector in Santa Fe. He is also the owner of a genuine AC Schnitzer Touring and an S54-swapped E30 M3. It was originally ordered in Sterling Silver Metallic over a tan Natural leather sport interior with sport steering wheel, air conditioning, intensive cleaning system (headlight wipers), a map light mirror, and 15 inch Euroweaves. The M Tech 2 kit was dealer installed and included all body panels, the M Tech 2 Steering wheel, and M Technic seat badges. The dealer also installed magnetic key locks and etched the VIN into glass. At some point it was repainted in the original Sterling Silver Metallic. When it came to the US the previous owner did a timing belt service including the water pump, cam seal, valve adjustment, valve cover gasket, and installed a US-market E30 exhaust with a catalytic converter. He also installed an Ireland Engineering front swaybar, Eibach Sport springs, Bilstein Sport shocks, and replaced the front control arms. We verified his work, and followed up with a transmission flush, selector shaft seal, filter, and pan gasket. After that we had the headliner replaced with a black cloth M Tech-style headliner. It is US-legal and comes with a clean Colorado title.
Exterior
The Sterling Silver paint is in very good condition and presents fantastically. It was a high-end respray with even orange peel and no glaring defects. (cracking in hood paint??) Close scrutiny does reveal minor imperfections and a few small paint chips on the plastic bumpers, one on the front and one on the rear bumper covers. There is no rust, except for slight corrosion on the bottom of the door seams, one small spot below the rear hatch glass, the driver's side mirror, and one small spot in the sunroof panel. I will include a replacement sunroof panel and driver's mirror with the sale (they are not painted to match). Common areas like the battery and jack trays, front fender seams, lower windshield cowling, and floorboards are rust-free. The exhaust heat shields, underbody fasteners, and jack points show superficial corrosion, but still present better than most E30s. Everything is pictured on our website if you are reading this elsewhere. The Euro VIN placard and firewall stamp are in place. The body and panel gaps are perfectly straight. The M Tech 2 kit is in excellent condition; with only the front lip having minor chips and one area of flexion. The lower lip portion is covered by black SEM trim paint and looks great. All other trim is present and intact. The windshield is crack-free, and the side windows are tinted. The Euro smiley headlights have good glass, as do the turn signals, marker lights, and tail lights. The intensive cleaning system is present and, shockingly, operational. The fog lights are crack-free and the front indicators are clear. The roof antenna shared with the E30 M3 is present and is great shape. The 15-inch Euroweaves are straight and true with only very minor curb rash. The center caps are present with good Roundel emblems. The Yokohama A520S tires are worn evenly with good tread remaining.
Interior
The interior is in very good condition. There are no odors. We had the headliner replaced with black cloth. The carpet is in good condition and covered by matching carpet floor mats. The dashboard is crack-free except for one tiny crack in the parcel tray. The M Tech 2 steeling wheel is covered in Alcantara that is in great shape and the instrument cluster gauges have red needles. All instrument cluster functions work correctly. The 6-button onboard computer has no LCD screen bleed-through. The Sony Stereo sounds great and has Aux and Bluetooth features. The heat blows warm, the air conditioning blows cold, and the blower motor is quiet and functions at all speeds. The power windows, sunroof, and door locks function correctly and the map light mirror has good bulbs. The tan leather sport seats are in very good shape. The driver's side backrest and bottom seat bolster have been replaced with matching leather. There is minor creasing on the remaining leather, but it is very presentable. They are heated seats and both are functional. The rear seat leather is excellent; they are fitted with headrests and fold forward like all Tourings. The rear hatch area is very clean and the cargo cover is present.
Mechanical
No common E30 issues are present. The engine idles smoothly and pulls very strongly to redline. All of the common oil leak spots are dry and it does not spot. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly. The driveshaft, differential, CV axles, and wheel bearings are quiet and free of vibration. The Eibach and Bilstein suspension has the perfect ride height over 15-inch Euroweaves. Combined with the Ireland Engineering front sway bar, it offers great handling, but remains compliant. The front suspension bushings are fresh, as are the rear shock mounts. The brakes are firm. A US 325i exhaust including the catalytic converter, resonator and muffler has been added. In Colorado we pay for and ensure it passes emissions.
