1972 BMW 2002 2002 Description

1972 BMW 2002

Fun, sophisticated, timeless, a work of art…these are all words that have been used to describe the BMW 2002, now it is your turn to get behind the wheel of one of the most iconic cars ever built. This is a very original specimen, in addition to the entire powertrain being original and numbers matching (including the engine, transmission and rear differential), the interior, body, trim, are all original as well.

The car underwent a full mechanical rebuild in the recent past which included a motor, new brakes all around, resealed gas tank and upgraded polyurethane suspension among other work to make this a very dependable and enjoyable vehicle.

This Bimmer has been well kept throughout its lifetime and everything from the original service booklet to a thick stack of receipts dating back to the very early 1980’s will accompany this car to its new owner.

-Exterior-

The body is in good condition, all of the panels are in alignment and there is no indication this car has ever sustained any accident damage. The sheet-metal is exceptionally healthy, both top and bottom... all of the typically rust-prone areas, such as the strut towers, floors, and rocker panels, are as solid as the day the car rolled of the assembly line in Bavaria.

The paint looks good from a few feet away, but is older and, while presents the car fairly well is certainly not show quality. Some minor blemishes and “orange peel” are visible upon closer inspection.

The car is further complimented by the factory perfect bottle cap wheels with Alpina center caps, which are wrapped in new Falken Ziex tires.

All of the glass is nice and clear with no scratches or hazing. All of the chrome and trim is in good to excellent condition.

-Interior-

The interior is in outstanding original condition. The seat upholstery is intact with no rips or signs of wear and remain supportive. The carpets, headliner, door panels, are all clean and are also in excellent original condition, despite being almost 50 years old. The dash is in overall good condition, but does have some very small cracks that have formed which are isolated to areas not readily visible. All of the lights, instruments, switches and controls work as designed.

-Engine & Transmission-

The engine was fully rebuilt by the previous owner, the work included full machining of the block. Upon my purchase of this vehicle, in order to further enhance the reliability and drivability, I commissioned a certified BMW mechanic to methodically go through the vehicle to not only insure every component was in full working order, but also to replace and/or upgrade any part that that may adversely impact reliability, from light bulbs (all have been replaced, including the headlights) to fluids. The end product was a vehicle that starts each and every time, drives beautifully and promises a worry free ownership. Among the work performed on this Roundie, the tie-rods, ball joints were replaced as was the rubber suspension, which was upgraded with polyurethane bushings, which greatly improved handling and responsiveness, but preserved the ride quality. The brakes were replaced all around including lines, rotors, pads, drums, shoes etc etc. The gas tank has also recently been resealed and is ready for another 50 years of service.

This BMW does not burn or leak a drop of oil, even after sitting for weeks at a time. The ride in this ‘02 is great, the transmission shifts seamlessly through the all of the gears with no slipping. The car drives straight and true, there are no squeaks, strange noises or vibrations from the engine or drive train.

Please note that one of the pictures of the instruments shows the car idling high, this was due to the engine being cold and the choke being fully open.

This Bimmer comes complete with its original tools, jack, spare tire (which appears to have never been used), two sets of keys, books, and CD-Rom repair manuals.
