1974 BMW 3.0CS 68,871 Miles Malaga 3.3 Liter Manual
1974 BMW 3-Series Description
Cars and the people that own them make for a good reason to wake up and come to work here. Cars are always interesting, but the owners sometime eclipse them as in the case of the is 1974 BMW 3.0CS Coupe owned by Randy Grubb (randygrubb dot com), creator of world famous Blown Glass and a series of cars, coaches and motorcycles collected and owned by the likes of Jay Leno and others. In a few words, a gifted fabricator and car nut that who has few peers.
Randy is clear about what design and function elements in a production vehicle appeal to him and the 1974 BMW 3.0CS has always spoken to him. He spent years looking for the right car, the first priority was the lack of rust to the original body. The first time I talked with Randy he told me a story about looking at a car he did not buy. He told the owner that he serious allergy, one that could not be ignored for health reasons. A little prodding by the seller and Randy told him the allergy was to rust. He has always built from new parts and materials, he never restores anything that had any form of corrosion, including engines and drivetrain. He hates RUST!
This car was restored by Coupe Kings of California and you can see the images of the build on their page . . It was an original California car they purchased with the intended purpose of doing a complete restoration in their shop. The car was stripped and the drive train removed. The Chassis was completely restored, the rear trailing arms rebuilt. The replacement engine and transmission are from a 1985 633CSi which was a 3.3 liter motor with a 5-Speed Getrag Transmission. The rear end installed was a 3.65 Limited Slip. A second, spare 5-Speed Getrag Transmission and Bell Housing are now included with the car. Dual Weber’s are used on the stock manifold. Pertronix Electronic Ignition replaced the stock set up.
As was mention before, Randy is obsessed with the presence of rust. On the 3.0’s, what is described as Elephant Skin is used as a coating and sound deadening device. It also is very adapt at wicking moisture. As BMW used this extensively on the body of the car, they are famous for having rust irrupting from these areas. On this car, the Elephant Skin was removed. The areas under the coating, mainly in the pinch welds, were checked and verified to be rust free. There was no corrosion at all, completely rust free. One of the other features Randy was very pleased with were the replacement of the accordion style stock bumpers front and rear with earlier the 1973 units on the car. They do look right. The wheels are Coupe King 17” Alpina style mags.
The interior is finished in original leather material, the wood refinished and beautiful to experience. When you open the door, the smell of leather takes you back to when the cars were sold new. The chrome is deep and plentiful as Randy kept pointing out to me. What a great design and in this case, what a great car.
Randy told me that he invested in Eastwood’s Internal Frame Rust Proofing kit which includes a 24” wand. After doing extensive on line research, he treated all of the known rust prone areas of the car with the product. He hates rust and made sure that it would never be an issue. The car has been owned for many years and driven. It is no longer a #1 car, a Trailer Queen, but a solid #3 driver, a car to be enjoyed and used. Why is it being sold now? So he can fund his rebuild on his McLaren Can-Am car! Nothing ever collects dust with him, not glass, cars or track days.
Please view the video we took of Randy describing the car on our site. It is very insightful and a much better job of describing the car than I have done here.
