Running, driving big body 1949 Buick. Lots of recent work done. New interior
1949 Buick Super Model 50 Description
Here is a nice running and driving 1949 Buick Super. This was purchased from a repair shop owner in Southern Arizona who was closing his doors. He had owned this car for 50 years! Just about everything is working; the radio works, all the lights inside and out including turn signals, dome light, map light, etc work, the windshield wipers work, and all the gauges work. Just about the only thing not working is the clock.
The straight eight engine runs well. The transmission shifts great. I just had the carburetor professionally rebuilt and the accelerator start switch still works! The brakes are good, as is the steering. The factory fuel pump is being assisted by an electric frame-mounted fuel pump. The original glass bowl fuel filter is in the trunk. I just installed a brand new correctly sized battery with the original battery hold-down. There is a vacuum leak at the wiper switch (which still works), so I temporarily crimped that hose under the dash. Overall, this car is great mechanically and can be a "get in and go" car exactly as it is.
I can see that there is some filler at the bottom of the front fenders and in the rockers, so I assume there has been some rust there at some point. It looks like there has been a patch in the drivers front floor by the rocker as well. The rest of the floor looks good as far as I can see.
The paint is old and not very good. It shows lots of signs of its age, but it is still shiny and the car could be driven and enjoyed without having to do anything to it if wanted. There are flaws all over including; scratches, chips, stains, fading, etc. There are no cracks in the glass, but all the glass is original and is de-laminating and yellowing here and there. The tires look like they have been on the car for some time, but seem to be pretty good and have lots of tread left.
The stainless on the car is very nice for the most part. The chrome on the other hand is not that great. There is some pitting on the front bumper horns, upper grille bar, and hood ornament. The chrome on the rear bumper is peeling, which currently has silver tape over the worst spots. On the right lower corner of the rear bumper there is a hole covered by silver tape. If I were to keep the car I would probably have the bumpers/chrome redone next.
The complete interior is new. Everything was done including; seats, carpet, door panels, package tray, sun visors, kick panels, wind lace, etc. The dash has the original paint. All the gauges are very nice and seem to work. The radio turns on and puts out nice sound. All the windows roll up and down fine and all the doors lock and unlock. The ignition key also locks the doors. The trunk opens and closes fine and it is very original in the trunk compartment. The trunk latches and secures fine, but the locking mechanism should probably be looked at as the handle spins all the way around and seems kind of loose.
There is new weather stripping on all four doors.
Overall, this is a nice, driver quality Buick. It looks great to passers-by and I always get compliments on it. Pretty much everything works, which is so rare in an affordable car of this age. It runs and drives and you can get in and enjoy it without spending a dollar.
