1968 Buick Skylark VS 400 Original Motor and Trans Driving Survivor Project
1968 Buick Skylark GS 400 Numbers Matching Description
This is a 1968 Buick GS 400 Skylark...engine and transmission are original to this car.....numbers matching! I bought it as a project and have had a lot of work done to it.It has its original PR coded 400 engine with this cars vin stamped into it.also still has its unique to a 68 GS 400, its original BA coded turbo 400 trans. Engine has been rebuilt and when we put it in had to complete it with many new accessories...like new water pump, fuel pump, rebuilt carburetor, new belts and hoses. Radiator was checked and was ok. A new front seal was installed in the turbo 400 trans before it was mated.
Looks to have one cheapie paint job over the original paint...looks like it was some sort of teal originally. Has a survivor look to it for sure...but really to be restored it should have some body work and new paint. There are rust bubbles here and there...a corner of the door or two..rear bottoms of quarter panels..and a could around the wheel opening mouldings as they are famous for trapping dirt and moisture. This GS was originally a vinyl top car and the roof looks really good...but it does have some bubbling in the paint below the back window. The drivers side inner wheel well needs some work under the battery as its rusted a little piece of it...and the radiator support too. A new platform for the battery was made and is good as is...but just telling you what I see, You can totally enjoy the car as is..just trying to be as complete as possible. Floor pans and trunk pan look good to me. Trunk pan was painted in some type of splatter paint. Inside the trunk is an originaly type spare and jack. All the body panels as far as I can tell are from this car and everything fits well. Both bumpers were rechromed and the front turn signal housings are missing.
The engine runs nice and strong...exhaust is dual with Flowmasters and turn downs before the rear axle...so it has a muscle car burble for sure. Every once in a while a lifter will click for a few seconds on startup but it goes away quickly...car has about 50 psi of oil pressure at idle. My mechanic said there might be grit in that lifter from assembly or something...and that it might go away. Also on this I just wanted to be as complete as possible about what I know. Engine might have only about 5 to 6 hours of running time after being installed and is not even broken in yet. I have heard that some types of oil filters cause this to happen as well. Car drives nice and light..power steering and brakes work well. Transmission shifts as it should. Has the correct road wheels and some cool spinners too. Tires have lots of tread but im sure theyre older.
I think a bucket seat interior on one of these is not super common..so its cool this one has that option. When you open the doors the rear dome lights come on as they should and the light in the back of the console works too. The covers for the dome lights on the sail panels are missing. Overall the interior is tired but original and all there. Has an aftermarket radio that seems like it wants to work but no antenna. There are a few small gauges under the dash that work well. The armrest on the drivers side is broken...headliner is fine but drooping down...also has shoulder belts which im sure was an option too.
The license plates on the car shown were probably on this car at some point and are included...but it is registered to other white CA plates. Car is currently registered in CA...but might be suspended because its not insured. No big deal ...just a few bucks and its reactivated. I just didnt want to pay insurance on it while we worked on it for the last few months. Clean CA title in hand...still in previous owners name..but properly signed over and will furnish whatever bill of sale you might need.
Overall its a really cool car...kind of reminds me of stuff you used to see running around here in Los Angeles 35 years ago...a slightly aged/worn look to a neat car that still looks very original and tidy because its never been a piece of junk. Looks to have been well cared for. You can enjoy the car as is..or take it to the next level. Pretty low production on these by GM standards...and its worth noting that the engine and transmission are the original ones to this car.
