As a postwar United States entered a new era of prosperity, Americans flocked to GM’s Motorama and showrooms to see what was new. Buick was at the leading edge of design at the time and the division did not disappoint for the 1954 model year with the beautiful new Roadmaster Convertible. This was a new car that was offered as separate model from its sibling Skylark Convertible that debuted one year earlier. Engineered with a 322 CI OHV Fireball V-8 engine, which would power full-size Buicks from 1953 to 1970 and was better known as the “Nailhead,” the big convertible featured an innovative Dynaflow automatic transmission and power steering. This dazzling 1954 Roadmaster Convertible is one of only 3,305 produced that year and has been in the same family since purchased new. Finished in correct Seminole Red and sporting a Black and White pleated leather interior, it rides on wide whitewall tires fitted to chromed wire wheels. Like all Roadmasters of the period, it was equipped at the factory with the full complement of power accessories, including power steering and brakes, power windows and front seat and a power-operated canvas top. The presentation is absolutely first rate and certainly makes a statement on the road. The exterior paint, chrome and glass are virtually flawless, the interior showing beautiful leather and a striking dash highlighted with engine-turned aluminum trim, gleaming chrome switchgear and steering wheel with chrome horn ring. Gauges, lights and horn are all fully functional, as is the original push button radio. Offered complete with a sales brochure, the original shop manual and reproduction owner’s manual, this is a fabulous, wonderfully presented classic ‘50s Buick that truly is the master of the road.
