1965 Buick Skylark Gran Sport Description
1965 Buick Gran Sport Convertible - Matching Numbers - Unmolested - Offered at No Reseve
I'm selling my dad's car for him. Unfortunately, now in his mid-70's, age has caught up with him and he can no longer enjoy the Gran Sport. I have the clear Massachusetts title in hand for the buyer. Has a valid Massachusetts Inspection Sticker valid through the end of August 2017.
As you know, the 1965 Gran Sport Convertible is extremely rare. Only 1.426 automatic Gran Sport convertibles were produced and not many have survived. This Gran Sport underwent a restoration in 2000-2001. At that time it received an engine and transmission rebuild, a new interior including upholstery and carpet, new top, brake system, all new suspension components, seat belts, lots of other little odds and ends as well as a fresh coat of original color paint. There have been roughly 14,000 miles put on the car since the restoration. Car comes with all the original manuals - Gran Sport Owner's Manual, Service Manual, etc.
Today, the car starts on the first turn and drives fantastic both around town and on the highway and shifts well It's extremely quiet and there are no rattles or squeaks to speak of. The power steering works perfectly. The engine is the legendary 401 Buick nailhead that came with 325HP and 445 ft lbs of torque. The transmission is the ST-300.
All key electrical components work - all gauges and lights, the horn, wipers, directionals. The original radio is intact. A Kenwood CD player was installed in the glove compartment to maintain the original look. Only the windshield washer, radio and cigarette lighter are not functioning. The e-brake is intact but doe not hold. Never a problem since the car is an automatic.
The body looks beautiful. On very close inspection imperfections can be found such as paint chips, missing clip on some trim but unless you have a trained eye and are looking for them, they are hard to spot. There is a small dime-sized ding in the center of the hood. This is the only noticeable imperfection. It shouldn't be difficult to repair. The driver's side door sags just a little from the hinges. They make an inexpensive repair kit for this as it is a common problem on this style GM. Both front and rear bumpers were rechromed in 2000.
The top still looks brand new. Unfortunately, shortly after it was replaced, the zipper on the rear window broke. He never had it repaired as the shop had closed up. Repair estimate is only $250 for the zipper. Also, several years ago, the motor stopped working. Rather than having it fixed, the top has simply been open and closed manually.
Inside trunk is solid. There is a very small little bigger than a quarter spot of rust on the left side- see pics. Other than that, the eyeball test and knocking all around the trunk reveals that it's solid.
Underneath the car is in great shape. There are new coli-over springs as well as coils on all four corners and new front shocks. The power steering gear was replaced in 2001 as well as the tie rods, ball joints and other steering components. Steering is tight and there is no play at all. The tires are brand spanking new. The stock (not original of course) dual exhaust works as it should. The fuel tank was also replaced in 2001.
