1949 Cadillac Model 62 Convertible
1949 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible Description
Greetings-
Here we have a California bought, driven, and stored 1949 Cadillac Model 62 Convertible up for bids. I purchased this beauty from a very nice lady whose husband who was nearing the final stages of a respectable driver quality restoration. Sadly, God had different plans and took Joe before he could finish his project. Joe bought this Cadillac in 1960 at 12,000 miles and enjoyed it up until his death in 1999. The car was stored in a double covered, dry garage until last week. The odometer now reads 1889 miles. Joe's wife told me the odometer has gone around once. The car was very close to being restored to a very respectable driver quality car. As you can see in the pictures, the convertible top/rear glass are in "as new" condition, as well is the interior. The story is that Joe had the top and interior replaced just prior to his death. The windshields are in very nice condition and the door glass is in very nice condition with no cracks or chips. The wing window tracts and glass are new in a box and needs to be installed. The side windows and trays are included and will need to be installed. I can't tell you the condition of the electric hydraulic power windows but would naturally assume they need attention after sitting for 20 years. The power antenna comes with the car and will need to be installed. Basically, the only things that I see to be missing to make the car complete are the rear view mirror, both inside door release handles, both wing window cranks, and the trunk release handle. These items are easily obtainable and inexpensive! The car appears to have had one re-paint in the mid 90's. It is very respectable looking even close up. The chrome and brightwork are also in very nice condition. I would give the chrome a solid 9 with 10 being asnew!
We tuned it up with new plugs and wires, installed a new battery and added fuel to the car and after two primes, the car roared to life. It idles smoothly as a Cadillac engine should with no vibrations or unusual internal noises. The fuel, temperature, ammeter and oil pressure gauges all work. The generator charges as it should and the oil pressure gauge indicated 20 psi at idle and above 30 psi at high idle after the engine is warmed up. I've idled the engine for over a half hour at a time in Redding's triple didget heat and the car didn't overheat, although I would have the radiator professionally flushed before going on a trip. The exhaust needs replacing. The engine is an OHV 331 CI and was new for '49. It has no noticable leaks and hits on all 8 cylinders but sometimes pops through the carbuerator under acceleration. I'm thinking it has a weak intake valve spring/springs from the valve/valves sitting open for so long. The good news is that the more I run the engine, the less it pops! Hopefully it will go away! The transmission is a Hydromatic 4 speed and seems to shift fine. The brakes/E brake work as they should with a solid high pedal and smooth stops.
The car is very solid and super straight with no dents and I haven't noticed any rust other than some light surface rust and a small repair on the drivers side floor where the heater core had leaked at some point.
The tires are old and needs replacing. A call to Coker will fix you right up! Two of them are wide whitewalls from the mid 60's and still hold air! This is a testament to how well the car was stored!
The electrical system is intact but needs some attention to get all the lights working. Some of the lights work and some don't. The windshield wipers work. The radio and the clock don't work.
To sum it up, this is a very nice example of a 69 year old true survivor that needs some tinkering done. I've seen junk '49 Cadillac convertibles sitting in the weeds go for 20k. Steal this one for a very reasonable price. If you have any questions or need specific pictures please feel free to text me at 530-five one five-55 eight five and I will get back to you asap. I will be super available to assist with loading the car when transport arrives.
Best of luck bidding!
