1960 Cadillac 60 Special Fleetwood Description

The 1960 Special was unique to the Cadillac line. David: 303.947.0444

Always the most luxurious four door that you can buy, save the limo, the 1960 introduced some unique and never seen before features. I believe that the tail fin on the 1960 Cadillacs were the prettiest ever applied and that combined with the 60 Special Strakes and the decided lack of chrome makes this a much more attractive car than even possibly the top of the line Eldorado. New for 1960, was the first vinyl top available on a Cadillac and this one has it. This car was originally a Persian sand car, that means it was painted the most valuable Cadillac color that there was available and someone repainted it white.

I purchased the car from an inexperienced owner who thought he could restore the car by taking it from shop to shop. He had picked out a superb body shop which did an excellent and incredibly expensive job. He replated most of the chrome while the paint job was being done and then took it to the most expensive upholstery shop in town. What he got back was a beautiful piece of junk. Even though the engine, transmission, and front end had been rebuilt, the car would barely move, the windows didn’t operate properly, the sheet metal was a poor fit, and none of the gauges worked. Also, the radio, antenna, everything was either inoperative or barely functional. He sold it to me. I gutted the interior, removed all the door panels, fit every piece of sheet metal, all the glass, rebuilt all of the power window motors and guides inside of each door, removed the recovered dash, and repaired all the gauges and their sending units, then I removed the entire front clip ( fenders, hood, inner fenders, core support, radiator, etc) painted the Persian Sand cowl white, rewrapped all the wiring harnesses, rebuilt all components that attach to the cowl, painted the frame from the cowl forward, and powder coated everything under hood that was black in various glosses to approximate the original paint colors. Bolts were plated, air conditioning was rebuilt, carburetor was corrected and the entire under hood was authenticated right down to proper bolt heads – even the air cooled generator hood was located and reapplied. So what we have now, is a show winning car, that’s the wrong color but the paint job applied is impeccable and beautiful. Along with everything else, I disassembled the front and rear grills, polished the pieces individually and reinstalled them. That’s how far I went with this car. The undercarriage appears pretty much as I got it, and everything was painted but I have driven the car numerous miles since then. The interior shop not only did a magnificent job on the upholstery but every single piece of the interior that was painted as it was originally, the interior chrome was polished or replated and the interior and exterior really pops. This being a Colorado car and a well kept one, it has the advantage of being from my inspection, rust free – both now and before its repairs.

What is wrong with the car: The right hand mirror (not installed by me) was put in the wrong place so you can’t see it from inside the car but it looks good from outside of the car. The left-hand mirror stainless should have been restored and wasn’t (pictured) but the chrome base is perfect. The left rocker molding leading edge is scuffed and should be worked and polished (pictured). The right rear door has a nearly invisible scuff in the paint. It’s been buffed, it’s still there, you can barely see it in the photo and you can barely see it on the car. I applied a little bit of the 1960 Tiki Gods to this vehicle so the curb feelers are incorrect, the chrome eyelids aren’t correct and the Tiki skull on the right side of the dash should probably removed but it’s just too much fun to drive it like this. The piston lock knobs are incorrect. Finally, all the weather strips were replaced – a couple of them have come loose, you know the finicky ones around the hinge on a 1959-60 car.

The hubcaps on this car were factory accessories and they approximate the look of the ‘57-’58 Eldorado Brougham wheels. These I purchased many years ago and they are restored originals. They are super rare, gorgeous in design and excellent in condition. On the interior, one of the best upholstery shops in Colorado did it, and they did it completely right down to the door panels and package shelf. The quality really shows. Once again the paint job, under-hood detail, and interior quality is really better than the value of the car deserves. This car has been recently driven and serviced. It has had a new auxiliary fuel pump installed and the air conditioning has been topped up and is blowing cold. The driving impression on this car is of a very high level. It fires straight off, transmission engages instantantly, it drives straight, stops straight and there’s just something special about the way the engine performs. This car is pretty much a hotrod compared to most of the Cadillacs that I have. So this daily driven and daily drivable car, because of the quality of the paint, chrome, under-hood detail can be taken to any show and it will garner respect, if not awards.

As with all NGDCARS offerings and unlike most collector vehicles, this car is completely drivable. Many collector cars are just shiny, pretty things, this one is beautiful and is fully capable of being driven and enjoyed.

THIS CAR IS STUNNING IN PERSON.
