1963 Chevrolet Impala Convertible
1963 Chevrolet Impala Description
A beautiful classic convertible from 1963, a Chevrolet Impala with red on red color combination. This car waslargelyone owner, a lady, from June 1963 to her passing in 1999, thenbequeathed to her daughter. She sold the car to a family friend in 2006. I purchased it in 2007 and have owned it since. From the documentation I do have, and by the way the car drives, this car is a relative low mileage vehicle at 67808.Most of the car is original, the 327 motor, the Powerglide two speed transmission, and differential, but have made a few changes to improve safety and to a lesser extent performance. Here is list of improvements (in my opinion) I have done to the car:
- The tires are new, bought last year. Maybe a hundred miles on them.
- Replaced the Rochester 4GC carburetor with a new Edelbrock Model 1406 which has an electric choke.
- Upgraded the intake manifold to an Edelbrock Model 2703 to match the Edelbrock carburetor. Hypothetical slight gains in hp and torque.
- Upgraded original points distributor to a modern pointless Mallory.
- Upgraded the Non Powered Brakes with the single master brake cylinder to a Classic Performance Products dual cylinder. The brakes are now Power Brakes due to vacuum booster.
- Upgraded Air Cleaner to a K&N.
- Replaced the gas tank.
- Replaced all wear related suspension parts. Shocks to KYB, ball joints, bushings, slave cylinder, etc.
- Replaced original ragtop plus top boot and all parts associated with raising the top. Hydraulic motor, hydraulic cylinders, hoses, etc.
- Replaced the original Delco AM only radio, with modern AM/FM/USB type. Replaced speakers with Kenwood in stock locations.
- Original electric clock is now a quartz movement. The face looks exactly the same in the dash.
- Entire stock muffler system has been replaced in stainless steel.
- Replaced both interior door panels with new reproductions. They look perfectly original and were priced accordingly.
- Replaced the carpet.
- Replaced the heater core.
- Replaced water pump, alternator, belts, hoses, serviced (rodded) the Harrison radiator.
- Replaced u-points, center support bearing, the drum brakes, etc.
Have almost all of the original parts that I had removed; intake manifold, Rochester carburetor, choke linkage, Delco radio, tire jack, spare, and air cleaner. ----Missing the original master brake cylinder, and the original points style distributor.
This car was assembled in Southgate CA from the "L" in the VIN. The 327 engine was assembled in Tonawanda NY from the code. All the codes I could see are correct to the time period.
Other important details that should be mentioned; The cooling system seems to do its job on this car. Have had the car in bad traffic on a hot night, and it did well. At some point, the original owner or heirs did a major or minor overhaul of the engine. The compressions of the cylinders are good all around, about 200-195 psi if I remember correctly. This engine does not burn oil. On a drive from Las Vegas to Anaheim CA, I averaged 17mpg, which seems pretty good for a V8 and a heavy car.
