The muscle car craze swept the nation in the late 1960s, when the exhaust rumble of a Hemi Cuda, Boss Mustang, or Pontiac GTO provided the daily dose of adrenaline for many of us. Fortunately for car-o-holics, there are quite a few nice muscle cars for auction on eBay lately. What a shame then, that a great number of these dinosaurs seem to be destined to languish in collector's stables as pure investment commodities.
Many of these hoarders seem to forget that the thrill of owning a muscle car lies in tinkering with and driving it.
Over the past year, the '68 Camaro for auction here has enjoyed an extensive “father-son” refurbishment. Along with numerous mods and upgrades that were done tastefully and with utmost care, the car is 100% road-ready for years of enjoyment.
Although not a show car, this simple Camaro is a living, breathing, serviceable machine that has exceeded the proud owner’s expectations in every way.
Now in VERY GOOD OVERALL CONDITION, it’s the epitome of a “driver quality” muscle car and is certainly clean enough to be the pride and joy of any die-hard bow tie fan.
Let’s take a closer look now.
Exterior:
The stunning front features a new grille, sparkling chrome bumper (front & rear) and 2” Cowl induction hood (all steel).
Years ago, the car was re-finished to a nice, driver quality red.
There are a few minor blems and uneven gaps; otherwise, the body and finish look great.
Rear view shows off the muscular side of this Chevrolet.
Now nearly a half-century old, she still looks amazing!
Gorgeous rally wheels with correct center caps and chrome beauty rings are shod with near-new BFG Radial tires.
While we’re down on one knee, let’s take a close look underneath:
More important than shiny paint is a healthy undercarriage.
The front body panels showevidence of a previous collision repair butas you can see in these photos, the frame appearscollision free.
Check out all the new bushings, springs, shocks and other cool stuff.
Upgraded disk brakes and new suspension are testimony that the car has been well serviced above and below.
There are no leaks or drips.
The sellerindicated thatsome areas of sheet metalunderneath were previously rustedbut have been cut-out and properlyreplaced.
Otherwise, everything below isundamaged and tight!
We'll inspect the interior next, shall we?
Lots of cool upgrades highlight this stunning interior.
The upgraded Procar Elite front bucket seats with both lap and shoulder seatbelts keep you safe, comfortableand snug.
With original style carpet, door panels, headliner and sun visors, there are zero tears or stains.
New console, new gauge cluster, new steering wheel, new seats and new dash pad up top.
Original speedometer was recently calibrated.
The RetroSound audio system with Bluetooth has an original, AM radio look but once synced to your iPod or smart phone, your recorded music sounds great - even at speeds exceeding double nickel.
With all new Latex weather stripping and new window regulators, everything looks and works great in this fully functional, upgraded interior.
Let’s look inside the trunk:
The spacious trunk features an original-style floor cover.
Original jack equipment is included but there is no spare.
Below the mat is a great looking trunk floor.
A picture tells a thousand words, this trunk is clean!
How about a peek under the hood?
Engine & Mechanical:
Originally a 6-cyliner, the upgraded 350 V8 engine and 3-speed automatic transmission are in great running condition.
Surprisingly perhaps, the wiring looks fantastic, the car always runs cool, and there are no oil leaks worth mentioning.
The 350 Cubic Inch, 8 cylinder power plant with Holly carburetor sounds crisp and runs smoothly, like a turbine, with superb oil pressure, cold or hot.
Warmed up, coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs or in rush hour traffic on a hot summer day.
All in all, the engine, transmission and rear-end are all solid; making this Camaro mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically.
Note the new master brake cylinder and boosterin the photo above.
Yes, any GM drive train can be very tough and reliable with a bit of preventative maintenance!
Drivability:
Paramount to the Muscle Car, driving experience is the element of unadulterated fun. It starts and idles smoothly, revs and pulls like an F-16 Fighter Jet, shifting smoothly through the gears with no unusual noises or smoke.
Smooth, strong acceleration will pull you into the back of your seat and turn heads coming and going. With rebuilt suspension components, upgraded front disk brakes and newer BF Goodrich radials, handling and braking are simple and superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies pulling or fading. All in all, this Camaro is a thoroughly convincing performer.
Here's a car with genuine American father-son story; not a sterile trailer queen, but a cherished toy to be driven and enjoyed.
This Camaro is up to any task imaginable. It could serve as a show car, a "new" old car to relive the good old days, or simply as a reliable, fun daily driver during ANY time of the year. At the very least, no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own. To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise!
