This is truly a find – an early 1990s ponycar with fewer than 6,500 miles on the clock – and it’s here at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. We proudly present this 1992 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Convertible “Heritage Edition” which is in remarkable preserved condition and only has had two previous owners who were both Camaro enthusiasts. The future value outlook on these low mileage 3rd generation Camaros look very promising and the time to buy one is definitely now as values will more likely increase over the next decade.
Made in GM’s Van Nuys, California factory, this two-owner vehicle is just one of 1,254 examples produced in 1992, when it stickered for about $21,500. Dressed in Arctic White (code 10) with red rally stripes with a beige power-folding top and beige interior with black, gray and red accents. This Z28 is very correct down to the bone, and still has that fresh showroom floor presentation to it!
The Camaro’s paint and trim are in impeccable shape; the car really looks showroom new. Its glass panels are clear and crack-free. The beige power-folding convertible top looks nearly flawless and when the top’s down, it stores under a fiberglass tonneau cover. The car’s lights are clear and haze-free, including the factory foglights. The car rides on factory, five-spoke aluminum wheels and white rims within Goodyear radials, sized 235/55R16 at all four corners. All of this pony’s body panels are straight and solid, including the domed hood and the front and rear energy-absorbing bumpers.
Under the red-striped hood is a LB9 305 CID V-8 with "Tuned-Port Injection" that was introduced in 1985. At its core was the stout L69 short block and it used the same aggressive L69 camshaft profile. The induction system was unlike any system used previously by GM. It featured a large plenum made of cast aluminum, with individual runners made of tubular aluminum, feeding air to each cylinder. And each cylinder had its own fuel injector fed by a fuel rail mounted above each bank. The engine bay is very tidy and the battery looks new. Backing the LB9 is a four-speed automatic transmission (4L60) and a Positraction rear end with 2.73 gearing. Driver convenience features include PASS-key theft-deterrent system, air-conditioning, cruise control, intermittent wipers, power steering, power brakes, power locks, power seats, power windows and power mirrors.
Inside, the beige interior, with its red, black and gray accents, reflects the low odometer reading. The interior looks as showroom new as the outside. The front bucket seats and demi-buckets in the rear are in excellent condition. The matching carpet is in similar fantastic fare. The instrument panel, with its "25th Anniversary" badge, and full instrumentation is in one piece and crack-free. The black, four-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel with its airbag module is ready to grab and hold tight. The mirror glass, center console and shift lever are all in similar, like new condition. Finishing off the interior is a Delco-Bose AM/FM stereo with cassette deck.
Nineteen ninety-two was the final year of the third generation Camaro. A "25th Anniversary Heritage Edition" option had been planned, with Corvette aluminum cylinder heads, tubular exhaust headers and six-speed manual transmission but this was scrapped in favor of a "Heritage Package" option (RPO Z03), which amounted to a graphics package of badges and rally stripes.
Some TPI 1992 Camaros received some of the "leftovers" from its Corvette cousin, which switched from Tuned-Port Injection to the new LT1 engine series in 1992. They received the rough texture, cast aluminum style, intake runners from the TPI Corvette instead of the regular Camaro smooth tube ones. In some cases, they were built with black painted valve covers instead of the normal silver valve covers. Some also received a blank throttle body plate, like the LT1, instead of the normal plate with "Tuned-Port Injection" script. This was also the last year of production at the assembly plant in Van Nuys, California (and the United States as a whole).
Competition to this Camaro in 1992 included Ford’s Mustang GT 5.0 Convertible, Mazda’s RX-7 Convertible and Nissan’s 300ZX Convertible.
Whether you are a Camaro fanatic, a Z28 fan or just someone who wants a classic Chevy convertible without a lot of mileage that has tons of investment potential in the future, this is a car worth checking out in person – before someone else does.
