1968 Chevrolet Corvette Description

1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

L36 427/390HP Tank Sticker Documented!

You are bidding on a nice running/driving1968 Corvette Convertible driver/project. This car wasoriginally orderedwell-equipped with the optional and RARE L36 427/390HP engine, Four Speed Transmission, Positraction, Disc Brakes,P01 wheel covers,Deluxe Interior,AM/FM radio (with correct/hard to find'68-only knobs), Tinted Glass, Astro-Ventilation, among other options. While this car is currently a Metallic Silver, it was originally delivered in British Green, which matches the983 codeon thetrim tag.

The original gas tank was dropped out of the car todetermineif the original tank sticker was in place, and to document the fact that it is indeeda real-deal 427 Corvette Convertible. The tank sticker indeed documents most options including most importantly, the L36engine option. While it's not the nicest/cleanest tank sticker I have ever locate, it is there and partially legible. Unlike 1000's of supposedly real Big Block Corvettes with ZERO documentation/paperwork, this car is clearly the REAL DEAL. The 427/390HP, four speed transmission, andseveral other options are visible on the tank sticker. We all know how many people are restamping/faking engines these days. I will buy 10 incorrect motor/tank sticker documented Corvettes to 1 supposedly correctengine, non-documented Corvette as you always know you have the REAL DEAL and not someone's built fake.

The body, frame, andthe otherareas of concern on most Corvettes of this era are actuallyQUITE NICEon this car. The car gaps/fits pretty darn wellfor a 50 year old Vette actually. The frame is devoid of ANY rust issues, and is astonishingly rock solid front-to-rear. The frame rail end caps, kick ups, birdcage, windshield frame, etc are all excellent, super solid, and devoid of rust issues! The frame only has very light surface rust in some areas, which would easily clean off/paint up. Not your average rusty/crusty/patched-up frameoften found on Corvettes of this era.I cannot find anyevidence of accidents, patch work, etc. The original fiberglass floor pans on the underside is unpainted/raw and would clean up beautifully. This car has NOT hadthe normal rattle-can black spray paint restoration to hide previousrepairs, rust, etc. What you see is what you get.The bonding strips are in all four quarter panels of the car, indicating that the car is a no-hit, original panel Corvette. The doors, hood, headlights, etc all align, fit well. The front header panel is extremely nice, without any of the normal aluminum pop rivet/corrosion often found on the steel bumper era Vettes. The thing I like about Corvettes with older paint is that you can see what you are getting. If there were past repairs--even quality repairs--20 plus years later, it's almost always evident.

The car has 20-30 year old paint and it will likely need a repaint eventually. It's decent enough if you wanted to put a polishing wheel to it, and touch it up a bit, respray the hood (paint peeling a bit in the middle of the hood), it could certainly be improved upon if desired. The paint is shiny but there are paint chips and scratches here and there so it's not a 100pt show car paint job but presentable enough to be a fun car that can be driven and enjoyed as it is without the worry of a rock chip, etc. There are no significant stress cracks or other serious damage to the body and it would be a very straightforward car to strip and repaint without the worry of extensive fiberglass repairs prior to a repaint.

The brightwork/chrome/trim is in good condition given the fact that it all appears to be original stuff. The front and rear bumpers appear to be originals as are the gas door, door handles, emblems, etc. New lower grilles have been installed on the front of the vehicle. The car has stamped steel wheels withthe correct/original P01 wheel covers.Tires are older, but hold air fine.

The interior appears to bea combination oforiginaland replacement componentry. The interior is very nice condition given this fact. The seat covers, dash, dash pad, gauges, and steering wheel are actually quite nice for original, and they arepartsthat are certainly nice enough to bereused. The upper/center shifter console and arm rest console are both new reproductionsthat were recently installed.RH door panels is in NICE condition for an original, and the LH door panel will need replacement as it is worn on the top where your arm would lay. As nice as the interior is, I would search for an original doorpanelto install, and dye it if needed. Rear storage trays and frames will need replacement, carpet is presentable/usable. The convertible top is black and needing replacement as it does not keep out the weather, but the top frame itself isin excellent condition. If you are not purchasing the separately available hardtop, keep this in mind for shipping purposes, as again, the soft top willNOT keep out the weather. I have a correct black vinyl-covered hardtop that can be purchased for the vehicle for an additional $1200, but it is NOT included at the listed price.

The engine compartment appears to be mostly originalwith the majority of original componentry in place. The engine runs well, it's quiet, doesn't smoke, and a new rebuiltcarburetorwas just installed last week ($425). The actual mileage on the vehicle is unknown, but it shows around 5000 miles on the odometer, so given the nice condition of the interior my bet is that it's likely 105K miles. The engine is a non-matching number replacement, and it appears to be a 1969396 high performanceblock according the rear casting number (3969854) and stamping on the frontpad (KB).The vehicle can be driven down the street, starts, stops and shifts but I would give it a more thorough check over before putting it out on the interstate, putting extensive mileage on it. Needed misc I am aware of: tach not hooked up due to HEI distributor. Vacuum switch needs replaced for wiper panel, wiper switch ormotorneeds replaced, shifter can be a little sticky. Most gauges work fine. The brakesoperate/stop but aren't especially strong so I would give them a check out as well. The exhaust is solid, quiet and devoid of any exhaust leaks or known issues. All old cars drip something but this car is surprisingly dry underneath and it does not leave puddles of this and that wherever you park it!

For seriously interested buyers, I can send additional pictures, includingseveral additional underside views, and a video of the vehicle starting up, and running too. Contact me and I can send these to you if you'd like to see the additional underside pictures, and/or video.

If you are looking for a complete, running/driving, tank stickerDOCUMENTED Big Block Corvette Convertible, here's an excellent opportunity for a collectible car that you can drive and enjoyas is, and do eventual further restoration on. The verbiage/information above, and the pictures are quiterepresentative of this car. Documented, big block steel bumper convertibles in ANY condition under$20Kare veryhard to find these days!
