As a car enthusiast, you already know improved technology allows us to transform vintage platforms into incredible performance machines. But you probably don't realize the extent to which those machines are built. In what amounts to literally buying a car and sending it directly to a reputable shop, you can have a classic that feels just as comfortable, performs just as well and looks twice as nice as any showroom new equivalent. And that's exactly what happened with this thoughtfully upgraded Camaro. Born from universal appeal and broad aftermarket support, this sinister coupe is a virtual tour de force of proven mechanicals. And with a clean body that's dropped on a massaged suspension, fitted with a striking interior and bolted to a limited edition GM Performance Parts 427, it's the kind of killer classic that makes factory-fresh bowties shake in their run-flats. If you're shopping for some fully-sorted muscle that puts a fresh twist on an old school favorite, you're looking at your next car!

BODYWORK/TRIM

The beneficiary of a detailed, ground-up restoration that was completed in late 2013, this sweet F1 is a solid, well-preserved panther that's ready for years of great cruising. That reboot, conducted by Grubbs Motorsports of Garland, Texas, integrated fresh fenders, new doors, fresh quarters and new floorpans into a solid fuselage that was meticulously worked into a straight profile. With that profile prepped, deep Tuxedo Black 2-stage was checked with traditional Super Sport stripes and buffed to a glare-inducing shine. And today, this Chevy rolls as some very impressive muscle that's primed to strain eyes and sprain necks!

Altered just enough to present a tastefully upgraded appearance without offending vintage purists, this Camaro is a model of great detailing. At the front of the car, a familiar Rally Sport grille centers an intense "SS427" emblem and modern Detroit Speed headlights above a chrome bumper, clear parking lamps and a familiar D80 chin spoiler. Above that grille, a Camaro-branded header draws the eye to a familiar cowl induction hood, which founds fresh glass behind bright frames and matte wipers. At the sides of that hood, a dressed profile hangs factory-style fender emblems, optional louver trim and correct marker lamps between factory door handles, dent-free rocker guards and a correct driver's mirror. And at the back of the car, a Camaro-branded decklid hangs a second D80 spoiler over a second chrome bumper, a fourth "SS" emblem and Rally Sport taillights.

ENGINE

Toss the glossy hood and you'll find 427 cubic inches of GM Performance Parts big block that's housed in a clean, Satin Black engine compartment. Number 145 of 427 all-aluminum ZL1 crate engines built from original castings to commemorate one of Chevy's most exclusive motors, this killer mill is fitted with an impressive roster of hardware. At the top of the $20K engine, a polished and decaled air cleaner drops wind in to a Quick Fuel Technology 4-barrel, which is plumbed with fresh stainless fluid lines. Under that carb, an aluminum, bowtie-branded intake rides between aluminum, bowtie-branded heads and aluminum, serialized valve covers. Those heads feed a cast aluminum block, which spins a forged rotating assembly under a streetable hydraulic roller cam. At the back of that block, a high performance distributor bounces spark between an MSD Blaster 2 coil and a web of GM Performance Parts plug wires. Beneath those wires, coated Hedman Hedders make quick work of spent gases. At the front of those headers, a GM serpentine drive spins a fresh alternator, a modern AC compressor and lucid power steering. In front of those ancillaries, a beefy aluminum radiator cycles coolant around two SPAL puller fans. Details like polished caps, braided lines, painted brace bars and Harrison firewall components are well planned and well executed. And, at the end of the day, it all adds up to stout 10 to 1 compression, an impressive 430 horsepower and a whopping 444 lb./ft. of torque.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Thanks to the pros at Rockwall, Texas' Horizon Auto Center, virtually every facet of this Camaro's mechanicals have been taken from a 10 to an 11. The car's world-class 427 fronts a tough Turbo-Hydramatic 400, which twists power to a rebuilt 12-bolt. That drivetrain floats in a factory-spec suspension that's upgraded with beefy rear sway bars and Unisteer power rack-and-pinion steering. At the corners of that suspension, four color-keyed calipers cinch four drilled and slotted rotors. Charred dinosaurs float from the aforementioned headers in to a large, Mandrel-bent exhaust system, which positions mean Flowmaster mufflers between an X-shaped crossover and polished stainless tips. Torque transitions through American Racing Torq Thrust Ms, which spin 225/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As. And everything, from the car's sturdy subframe connectors to its polished transmission pan, is clean, lucid and ready to roll.

INTERIOR

Inside this cool Chevy you'll find a Deluxe White Houndstooth interior that was installed by Route SixSix Auto Interiors of Rowlett, Texas. Deluxe bucket seats stretch clean vinyl under pliable headrests. In front of those seats, a wood-trimmed dash hangs factory telemetry behind cool air conditioning and modern, direct-fit audio. Beneath that dash, fade-free carpet floats "SS" branded mats between familiar Fisher sills and a factory console that centers a factory horseshoe behind factory accessory gauges. At the sides of that carpet, sculpted door panels front a quartet of power windows. In front of the driver, a classy Rally Wheel laps a tilting column. And behind the passengers, a dressed and decaled trunk frames a correct jack and full-size spare tire.
