This 1956 Chevrolet is a totally unique and a one-off type of car. We just recently came across this car from a friendthat knew the builder of this car whom was a vo-tech type of teacher for a community college and school. He acquiredthis car from him as to which the owner has had the car since 1986. For the past 20 Plus years this was an ongoingside project that has yet to be finished. For the the most part the bodywork and fit has been done and an exceptionalamount of time has gone into this car. Most people, including myself, cannot image the painstaking hours and laborthat was put into this Chevrolet for a truly total show car when completed. For starters this was a 1956 210 Series2-Door Sedan with a 2-1/2" Inch Top Chopped utilizing a 1957 Oldsmobile Roof with the tri-rear window setup and the raisedlip on top of the roof that extends down into the trunk lid. The inside moldings have also been chopped down. The trunklid and hood have all been "Pancaked" and smoothed on the underside as well. All of this work was done professionallyand to the up most details. The front headlight assemblies have been extended and the grill shell all smoothed usinga 1957 style bumper that has also been welded up and smoothed into fit nicely and tucked close to the body. The insidegrill shell is a 1953 Buick style all hand laid in fiberglass and alot of work just into that alone. The body of this Chevrolethas been channeled 3" over the frame with a full belly pan underbody all smoothed and ready for paint. The carhas a great stance with that channeling done. Even the underfender wells, as I tried to show in the one photo, have all been smoothed and an impressive amount of time to get theminto the condition that they are in right now. Again, nothing overlooked when it came to the body of this car! The rear setupof the car is the 1956 style Packard Tail Lights that have also been tucked and fitted along with the rear bumper assembly. The license plate assembly has been custom fitted into the rear of the body and all attention was done to achieve this. The inside of the trunk area has also been welded up to finish out smoothly. The interior for the most part is out of the carand the dash assembly was also welded up and smoothed to give it that clean look,or an ideal start to cut any holes thatyou may desire for audio or a/c and heater controls. The doors do line up nicely and have been rounded on the edges, which that as well is a task in itself. The passenger door has two sunken antenna holes for that old school look and thepipes on the lower body are all smoothed and molded in to run "leg" pipes through them as what I expected the builderwas going for.
The chassis on this car has also been completely disassembled and the frame boxed and smoothed finished in the HouseOf Color Tangelo Pearl. The paint was done to show quality and is very impressive just on that work alone. The rear endsetup is a Jaguar style with in board disc brakes and coil over shocks. All finished in the Tangelo color as well. The front endalso has a disc brake setup and all of the upper and lower control arms all finished in the Tangelo color and all bolts coveredby the polished aluminum "caps" as just about every piece of hardware on the chassis and engine bay.
The engine that is in the car I was told a 283 C.I. V8 along with a Powerglide Automatic Transmission that were all rebuilt.I cannot guarantee all of that as I do not have receipts and documentation to back that up, however I do have the previousowners name that I bought the car from and will be glad to share that information with you if a serious buyer on the car.The engine as shown in the photos has also been painted to match the chassis and several unique things done such as theplug wires going through the valve covers and the cylinder heads and intake manifold have all been smoothed as to give itthat look of one piece. It is amazing and I cannot imagine the amount of hours that was just put into that alone!
The engine bay and all inner fender wells have been welded up as one piece and smoothed along with the firewall. All of thelines and inner sides are done to perfection and are ready for paint. Another impressive amount of work and labor that hasgone into this. As most will know, all of the inside inner fender wells are bolted in, and as you can see they are all smoothedon this one. The radiator area, grill moldings, and complete underside, have all been smoothed. The photos alone do notdo this car justice until you see it in person!
There is several things included with this car but please note that it is a project and that this Chevrolet is not all complete.I do have the rear window glass is very good shape with the rear window trim. I do not have the front windshield nor theside glass, however I do know of a source locally that can make those items up. I do have several original pieces of stainlesstrim that are in good condition but still would need to be restored. I believe most all of the outside trim is there. I do have an old original style Chevrolet Radiatorand air cleaner assembly. Packard Tail Light Lenses are with the car. I do have an old carburetor but not sure how good it reallyis. The steering box and brake pedal assembly is in the car but no steering column nor any steering wheel. There is a power brake booster along with a set of exhaust manifolds that go with the car. What you see in the photos is what I have with the car. The car does rolland is setting on 14" steel wheels but manually has to be turned. I do not have much of the interior. No seats, Some gauges anda speedometer bezel, no door panels but there is window mechanisms in the drivers door but not the passenger one. I do have the mechanisms for the rear inside roll up quarter glasses. There is also the door latch mechanisms that I did see in the boxes. The interior moldings are there and have been chopped downand welded back to fit the chop top roof. And I must add that work was done very well. You really cannot even see the welds onthe back side of the moldings and the front sides have already been finished and ready for paint. There is things that you still will need such as an exhaust system, wiring harnesses, fuel tank and fuel lines, brake calipers, wiper motor, etc, just to name a few.
Just to get this car in the condition that it is I could easily see $40,000 to $50,000 worth of labor alone. Most shops will charge youeasily $55 an hour plus and just imagine the hours already painstakingly put into this project.
Once finished this would be one of those high dollar resto-mods you see sell at collector car auctions.I will try and give my best description of this car but I am sure I have left some things out so please ask questions beforebidding.
