1970 SS 396 El Camino Project -- Matching Numbers Drivetrain and Build Sheet
1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS 396 Description
1970 SS 396 El Camino Project/Barn Find. Someone needs to save this car!! Originally Cranberry Red with stripes.. A/C, TH 400, SS Gauge Package with Tach and Clock, P/S, P/Disk Brakes, Bench Seat. I have a clean Florida title in my name.
THE GOOD:A real 1970 SS 396 as documented by the Original Build Sheet and Engine Numbers including Engine Code, Stamped VIN in block pad, Cylinder Head and Block casting numbers and dates. TH 400 Transmission and 12 Bolt Rear also have correct numbers for this vehicle. Engine in the car is the long block and is very clean inside and has good compression and oil pressure when cranked on an engine stand. It has been rebuilt in the past by a prior owner. Has SS dash with gauges. Comes with new aftermarket Cowl Induction Hood sheet metal.
THE BAD:Even though this El Camino has lived its life in Florida the body is riddled with rust. The frame is solid except for a small area near right front where the sway bar mounts. I am told it spent some years outside where the bed filled with leaves and stayed wet.The lower wall between the cab and bed is gone. The outside of the B Pillars have holes. It was originally a vinyl roof car so the roof is bad. A prior owner cut a hole in the left quarter panel for an unknown reason. BTW, the engine was not in the car during this time and was stored in the barn. The cowl, including where the VIN Tag and Trim Tag are, is SOLID. Additionally, many parts have been scavenged from the car, such as but not limited to, radiator and shroud, inner fenders, drive shaft, dash harness, some trim, gas tank, rear window glass and engine accesories.
A REBUILD OPTION:Not included in this sale but available at additional cost is a 1968 El Camino rolling frame with body cowl back. Bed, Roof, B pillars are in good condition. Frame is in good condition. Has one soft lower quarter and some floor pan rust but would otherwise make a good donor body to be grafted to the 1970 above. Comes with a Florida title. Will sell for $1500 to the buyer of the 1970 El Camino above.
Will require a trailer to be picked up. Cannot be shipped as it does not run.
Its rare to find a 70 El Camino with this level of drive train originality and the original build sheet. Whether restored by using the 68 body or by repairing the 70 body this will be a valuable classic when completed. Could be parted out for more money. But it deserves to be saved.
