I spoke with the seller prior to purchasing the car on Feb. 11, 2011. It was purchased new in late 1967 by his brother who was in the Viet Nam war, returned home and purchased the car with his combat pay. It was an L79 car, which meant it had a high performance 327 cu. inch, 350 hp engine. It came with a four speed manual transmission and removable hard top, but was ordered with no convertible top. It had no power steering, power brakes, power windows, or air conditioning.
Immediately upon taking delivery, the brother had the dealer install the L88 fender flares and big block hood. His brother drove it until his untimely death in a second tour in Vietnam in 1973. The car was then garaged for approx. 25 years. At that point, seller (brother of original owner) decided to restore it with new paint and interior. It was kept original except he changed out the original black carpet for blue to match the seats. Cool Custom Rods did the repaint in the original Lemans Blue color.
In 2008 owner decided to fix it up and sell it. He had David Hitch of Hitch Repair Service at 108 8th St. in Maryville, Tn. go through the engine and freshen it up. This rework included cleaning the engine, resurfacing the flywheel, grinding the crank, honing the block, installing new cam bearings, grinding the valves, installing new seats, and resurfacing the heads. He also cleaned and magna-fluxed the heads and did a vacuum and straight edge check. He put in new plugs, wires, dist. cap, main rod and cam bearings, installed 8 new connecting rods, new lifters a new water pump, rings, fuel pump, etc.
He also put a complete new exhaust system on it at that time including new headers. The original exhaust manifolds were included in the purchase. He also put on a new intake manifold and four barrel carb. The original intake manifold was included in the purchase. He also put a new gas tank on it. Then he put a full set of American Racing Mags with B. F. Goodrich tires all around at a cost of $2,500. New gas shocks were installed at the same time. Many other parts, like new headlight door actuators and wiper door motor along with numerous new trim pieces were installed at the same time.
I completely rebuilt the transistorized distributor with all new parts in March 2011 and put in a new battery. I also put in new seat belts because the mechanism in the old ones was rusty and didn’t work. I also had Al Knoch interiors install a new convertible top and new door panels at the Corvette Expo in Sevierville, Tn. Later I purchased a Vintage Air system and had it professionally installed.
