Evolve Motors is pleased to present the 1994 Impala SS, a sports sedan with attitude.
I remember the picture like it was yesterday… Slinky black sedans led by a sheriff’s patrol car with blue beacons blinking, stretched beneath massive cylinder sections of the Apollo booster rocket displayed at NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Center near Houston.
Each sedan, framed against this Space Age backdrop, looked identical in windswept profile. Each was trimmed in serious black and carried a blackout front grill with not a hint of chrome. Flash points came strictly from solar reflections bouncing off expansive curved glass of sloping windshields, and the five streaks of alloy wheel spokes.
Even when backed against the bulk of gigantic rocket boosters, these black sedans also looked big – and they were, stretching almost 18 feet from bumper to bumper.
Peek beneath those extended prows and you’ll find a big LT1 Corvette V8 ready to pump you up to fast-lane action.
Also, their covert handling components range from front and rear stabilizer bars and some specific gas-pressurized deCabon shocks to quick-ration power steering gears.
Inside, leather buckets and a leather-laced steering wheel set the mood for aggressive, yet elegant, performance.
Then the badge on Chevrolet’s big macho cruiser makes a statement of it’s own: Impala SS, deriving it’s name from the African antelope of the same name.
After the absence of 25 years, Chevy’s archetypal sportster returned with something borrowed from yesteryear (that vintage nameplate) and various elements from early 90’s sedans (such as the full-size Caprice chassis and sheetmetal shell), but with new active sport components added (like the beefy Corvette V8 and hard cornering suspension elements) to blast a course toward tomorrow!
It’s a clear cut case of deja vu all over again. Yet the 94 Impala SS is not it’s 1950’s namesake. The only similarity, in fact, comes from the name and Chevy’s tradition for sporty engineering. The new version, with four doors instead of two on the original issue, contains a wealth of sophisticated gear for performance as well as safety.
It also provided a consumer choice for anyone who longs for aggressive automotive action while trapped in the familial syndrome as a carpooling fool hauling spouse and kids to shopping malls and little league games. With this thing, see, you can still carry everyone in the family but you’ll have so much fun along the way, thanks to all that pedal power and pliant road manners. In retrospect, I was never a fan of the Caprice – too much car, not enough muscle. Why would Impala be different?
Well, it is. It’s radical; it’s bad, which is good…
Take a walk around this low mileage survivor and see that the exterior sheet metal sits pretty draped in her “bad in black” paint, showing no signs of damage, repairs, or God forbid, rust. We were absolutely stunned to find that a young little 74 year old lady had originally owned this car, and she and her husband seemed to be very much in love with it even before it hit their dealerships lot! They were reluctant to get rid of it, but when they did they chose the right guy. The gentleman we bought the car from took just as good care of it as the previous original owners. It stayed in a climate controlled garage for the better part of the last 17 years, only being brought out on nice weather days to be enjoyed for a short time, and put back. Needless to say, the cars exterior is flawless, from the rubber to the rooftop. If I had to score this cars appearance on initial walk through, I would give it a 9.3 out of 10, only denoting for some very minor flaking around the edges of the bowtie emblem in the grill.
Slide into the cockpit of this blacked-out land yacht and take stock out your interior. If you’re familiar with mid-90’s Chevrolet interior, then you’ll feel right at home. Much of the Caprice interior followed the Impala into production, with Chevy adding a few pieces of Impala décor to remind you this isn’t grandpa’s bingo machine. The deep bolstered contoured front seats will keep you planted during any spirited driving. Of course the front seats adorn the traditional SS emblems in the headrest, along with the iconic antelope in the center headrest of the rear bench. You’ll enjoy the bright display of the digital gauge cluster, especially during night time driving. All of the amenities seem to work flawlessly, including the power windows, doors, and seats. The heat blows hot, the AC blows cold, and the REO Speedwagon cassette in the dash blows the neighbors hair back! We’re just happy to see that someone owned this car with the intentions of keeping it a collector quality automobile, and it shows in every detail of this gorgeous SS. This car scores an easy 8.7 out of 10 on our scales, as we do note that there are 3 mysterious “dimples” in the leather of the passenger seat back. The dimples are not holes, not tears, and they certainly don’t smooth back out despite all of our efforts. We also note in the pictures the door bezels that house the window switches etc. appears to be discolored slightly on both sides. I believe this was a common occurrence for mid 90’s GM vehicles.
Mechanically, this wolf in sheeps clothing is ready to attack. Attack on ramps, parking lots, unsuspecting Mustangs. You name it, this car is ready to handle it. We sifted through the drive train with a fine tooth comb, and found nothing worth noting. A fresh change of oil and a quick tune up, and she was out of the shop faster than she came in. All of the original rubber on the car is still in good condition, and shows about 70% tread life left. The car is surprisingly quick for it’s size, and also surprisingly nimble. The suspension is nice and tight on it, allowing us to huck it around town like we just stole it. The car turns heads around every corner, and with it’s angry, menacing demeanor, kept most our lane clear for most of the trip. I would assume when people look in the mirror and see an angry cop car staring them down, they tend to slide on out of the way. No, she’s no patrol unit, but if you play your cards right, you may just get to meet one. Mechanically this car needs nothing, other than a driver in the seat and a tank full of gas. So how good is it? Well, independent testing from a leading auto magazine revealed the Impala SS will run from zero to 60 in 7.1 seconds, reach the quarter mile post in 14 seconds, and end up topping out near 150 mph. Without splitting hairs, these figures match the marks set by German and Japanese sedans priced at more than twice the bottom-line figure of this Chevrolet. Brand new the car listed at $23,355. You end up with a lot of car for these dollars, including significant safety systems which begin with a steel-reinforced safety cage construction for passengers, but extend to dual airbags, 4-wheel disc brakes linked to a multi-channel anti-lock system, and more. This sedan’s quickness impressed me, but I was also awed by Impala’s ability to arrest it’s formidable bulk, with 60-0 distances under 120 feet. Competitor’s need another car’s length to stop, a distance which could well spell the difference between a safe landing and disaster. Driving the Impala SS with it’s bad-in-black treatment, sinful acceleration, and unexpected agility makes me recheck the lure of imported sports sedans.
