1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS LS6 454 w/Build Sheet Description

Suzanne “We’re playing with the big boys!”

Allison “Yes, but girls like to play with boys!”

It's 4 o'clock in the morning and I can't sleep. The clock just chimed 5 times. I have to be at work an hour early today. I want to meet our technicians before they start up this car. There are so many worries! What can I do? How do I sell it? What does it mean? How do I promote it? How do I do this car justice? The thing is... I'm not into muscle cars. Or domestic cars for that matter. Until now. Ok, I'll admit it. I'm a European Snob. But I learned, there is something to be said about American will-power and American sense of humor. American ingenuity.

When the owner (25 years) of this above mentioned car asked me if there was an airport nearby, I thought it meant for him to fly into to see our 63 Corvette Convertible. But then he said…”You're gonna wanna put airplane fuel in this car.” What does all this mean? I have studied, pondered and researched for over 6 weeks. I've called everybody I can think of on this

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6 and#12 with the National LS6 Registry! This is the Holy Grail of muscle cars representing American Ingenuity.

My research has taught me that this is one of the rarest and most sought after muscle cars ever built. Back in the day when you needed high octane leaded fuel and didn't matter that it only cost $0.35 a gallon because at 8 mpg it just sucked it down. This monster is a coupe and has no sunroof. But it does have this really cool Cowl Induction flap that gulps in the air I learned the word “cavitation” from my live-in sales manager Kurt Piser. The oil has to be at operating temperature before you can get an accurate

oil pressure reading on the optional oil pressure gauge. Here are the details..

The Chevelle muscle car is epitome of parts- gathering from existing bins for adapt-ability to something that can and will perform. The last in the line of supercar products by Chevrolet may well be this one: a 454- cubic- inch, 460- horsepower, V8 driven SS Malibu. It could be the last because, even though buyers might still be available after 1971, strict legislation concerning emissions outputs, coupled with climbing insurance rates, will render this car or this type of car- worthless. We savored every moment of this car, for the memory may have to last a long time. I hope this experience can be related well enough for all of us to enjoy.

This particular Malibu is a hard one to trace through normal specification sheets and pricing literature. In a sense, it doesn't exist. Chevrolet doesn't emphasize that an

LS6 454- cubic- inch V8 option is available in anything other than a Corvette.

But Chevelles can have it too, along with a cowl induction hood.$147.75,4.10:1 rear axle$25.30,SS Package$503.,LS6$263.

Muscle Carin March 1968 apologetically compared the Chevelle Malibu to an Alfa Romeo in the ride and handling department. In 1970 race driver Sam Posey laps the twisty Limerock course in a 1970 Chevelle only one second slower than his 289 Cobra, quite a feat considering the Chevelle. almost a full ton of extra weight, much of it concentrated under the hood for a marked front weight bias. If things were somewhat tamed in the handling department horsepower ratings were getting truly barbaric. The Tyrannosaurus Rex of muscle cars, violient, powerful, hungry for fresh meat, and short-lived road test of the era pulled 0 to 60 miles per hour times of 5.4-6.0 seconds and quarter mile times around 13.8 seconds. The LS6 454 Chevelle could eat anything on the street, washing it down with the big drink of gasoline at a hot rod reported average

of 8.4 miles per gallon. Only 3,733 LS5 and LS6 454 equipped Chevelles were sold in 1970. The LS6 was only made one year- 1970

Of all of the missile cars in the past 25 years this is the one of the most potent. an extremely healthy 454 big block, these all most common looking beast provided a thrilling ride for all who draw them. Outwardly they resembled most other Chevelle's except for the Powerball hood and SS 454 markings on the front quarter panels, but that is where the similarities ended. These 450 hp bowties really left their mark on the asphalt with quarter mile results of 13.12 seconds at 107 miles per hour. The LS6 Chevelles were picked by Car Craft as the hottest muscle car in 1987, due in part to

their impressive power to weight ratio.

Number one 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6

This mean machine had it all with an unprecedented 450 horses, Chevy super

cool super sport image, GM's roomie, comfortable body platform, and a cutting-edge chassis that held the road with Detroit's best big block bullies and featured

reasonably state-of-the-art standard front disc brakes. An LS6 SS454 could run

as fast as any factory fast car on the road, and it could also haul the kids to school, making them the envy of all their classmates.

It’s here, its back and this is a monster of a machine! You may think asking a start of $95,000 is alot for a car that needs a good paint job and put back to its original color- Dark Blue. The original build sheet has the rear seat spring markings permanently embedded in it. Per Hagerty Values- In 2007-this car was selling for $332,000 to $417,000. Dropped to a low of $49,000 to $99,000 in 2008. Currently steadily rising and selling between $61,000 and $175,000. Don't be kicking yourself in a few years from now that you should have, you could have & I told you so!

P.S. I’m no longer a European car snob. As a music major I couldn’t afford mechanics. Yes, that’s what they were called back then. So I ended up working on my clunkers by myself. I loved it. And I loved getting my hands dirty. I'm frustrated mechanic. My roommates would constantly remark about me being under a car doing brake pads, changing oi, changing an alternator or rebuilding a master and slave cylinder... but that's my Saab story. Maybe it's because I'm a woman? Cars have always represented a sense of freedom to me. Giving me the ability to escape, to move, to get to work, to make my living, to get to school, to get away from whatever. Freedom to be on the road with the wind in my hair, top down.....
