July 27, 2018
The purpose of this letter is to substantiate the fuel-injection option on a 1962 Corvette (VIN code 20867S103353) as a car that carries Chevrolet’s option RF ($484 option in 1962) as a fuel-injected car. An inspection was conducted on July 27, 2018 on the premises of Dragone Classic Motorcars at 5 Conair Road in Orange, CT. The inspection took approximately two hours and involved examining the components that distinguish the fuel-injected version of this car from a car that does not have this option. What follows are the findings of this inspection, which includes photos of the subject car.
First we will establish the VIN code and the engine of this car.
This Corvette carries VIN code number 20867S103353, which is found on the steering column.
The engine number as found on the engine block is photographed here.
It is noted that the last six digits in both the VIN tag and the block casting are both 103353.
The last two alpha characters are RF indicating that this engine is a:
327 cubic-inch V-8
360 HP
11.25:1 compression ratio
Fuel-injected
Manual transmission
As the intent of this letter is to establish that this car is an authentic fuel-injected car there are several aspects to the build that are unique to the 1962 Corvette with the fuel-injection option. We will cover these one at a time.
First, the windshield washer bottle and vacuum tank were mounted on the passenger side inner fender near the battery on a fuel-injected car. This is the case with the subject car as evidenced by this photo.
A heat shield was also added to protect the plastic washer bottle as noted in this photo:
The 1962 fuel-injected car also used a tachometer with the 6500 rpm redline. This photo shows the correct tach for the RF option. (Note-this tach was also used on the 340 horsepower Corvette as well.)
The authentic generator for the RF option used the numbers 2268. The subject car has these numbers as evidenced in the photo.
There are also two holes on the inner driver’s side fender near the hood lip where the air cleaner is attached. This car has these as evidenced by this photo.
The tachometer cable was driven from the distributer and not from the generator as in non-fuel-injected cars. This photo shows the cable coming from the distributer.
The fuel-Injection emblem used on the 1962 Corvette was not mounted perfectly level. Also, on the back of the emblem are the words “General Detroit.” (Note- the emblem was not removed during this inspection in order to avoid damage.)
Lastly, as indicated by this chart, sources indicate the serial number on the Rochester fuel-injection unit for the 1962 Corvette to be 7017360.
The subject car carries this number on the Rochester fuel-injection unit.
All of the indicators suggest that this Corvette was built as a fuel-injected car from the GM factory.
The Chevrolet Corvette is widely recognized as an American icon in sports car history. Born in 1953 as one of Harley Earl’s projects at General Motors, the Corvette has become a chapter of automotive history all by itself. In the present day, it has become a highly refined sports car that is capable of awe inspiring performance, but long before the day of the Z06 or the ZR1, the Corvette was a simplistic roadster that offered stellar performance in a great package. When GM offered a V-8 for the Corvette in 1955, performance jumped a notch and the Corvette became a fierce competitor on the track. The 1962 Corvette featured here is the last year of the first generation and as such represents the ultimate in refinement for the earliest models. Quite simply it’s a car that runs as strong as it looks.
The 1962 Corvette is a timeless design that represents a unique era in automotive styling. This Corvette’s performance, dedication to authenticity, and tasteful color combination makes it an outstanding addition to any collector car collection. The collector world of Corvettes is one of precision and authenticity and this Corvette is a car that does not disappoint in its attention to both. With its attractive color and correct restoration it is a car that truly demonstrates the unique history and heritage of America’s most famous sports car.
