1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 RS (#s Matching Engine, Trans, & Rear End) Description

The 1970 Z/28 was after all the pinnacle of the Z/28 in power and performance, even more so than the 1969 Z/28. There were more than 20,000 1969 Z/28s produced in 1969. In comparison, most do not realize that there were less than 9,000 1970 Z/28s produced. Out of the more than 124,000 Camaros built in 1970, only 7% were Z/28. As for how many 1970 Z/28s produced were also RS Rally Sport cars with split front bumper, it is unknown. However, it has been said in speculation less than 10% or less than 900. Furthermore, the 1970 Z/28 made 70 more horsepower than the 1969 Z/28. In 1971, things would change. The power and performance was pulled back/reduced, the 1971 and later receiving a 10 bolt rear axle and compression ratio of only 9.0:1 or less with the good #186 large valve 2.02/1.60 heads being yanked to be replaced with small valve 76cc chamber smog heads in 1971. It soon after kept getting worse by 1973feminine hydraulic lifters catering to women and men who did not know how to adjust the valves, and smaller carburetor-- the last testicle of the LT1 was clipped off.

The 1970 Z/28 with big valve #186 head, high lift camshaft on solid high rev lifters, 780 dual feed Holley, 11.0:1 forged domes, forged #1182 stroker crank and Winters #110 high rise intake was the most masculine of any Camaro ever built! The sound of the solid lifters drumming away talking to one's ear and the aggressive feel and sound of the Munice w/ Hurst gate as one pulls the gears with the beautifully styled chrome shifter ball in hand is something to be experienced. If this in itself does not reel you in, I suspect the tuff look of the four rear recessed tail lights and split front bumper w/ the Z/28 badging surely will!

This is a very nice 1970 Z/28 RS. It has had a very high quality nut and bolt restoration only 1373 miles ago. The odometer was set back to zero at the time of the restoration. The paint and body work performed at this time is extremely high quality, and the car is exceptionally straight with excellent panel fitment. This car has the numbers matching CTB solid lifter engine, numbers matching M21 Muncie close ratio 4-speed transmission, and numbers matching date coded COZ code 3.73 ratio 12-bolt posi-traction rear axle. This car has power steering and power brakes. This is a center console car with Hurst shifter. The engine and transmission were completely overhauled and blue-printed. The engine received new forged pistons, rings, bearings, cam and lifters, and more. The transmission received new gears, synchros, dog keys, rings, torque lock sliders, seals, bushing, and gaskets. The car received a new clutch and was professionally adjusted. The rear quarter panels appear to be GM stamped decoding to the Fisher's /GM body plant where they made and the week. I see no evidence of any seams in the quarters when looking from inside the trunk that would indicate the car has ever had 1/2 quarters or anything like that. The car has very profound pinch welds present throughout showing the quality of the metal on the car! The car has GM 1970 dated light lens. The car has very profound pinch welds present throughout showing the quality of the metal on the car! The pot metal (not reproduction plastic) grill filler on the car, Z/28 grill emblem, door panels, and center console appear to be GM original. Grill is correct argent silver for 1970 Z/28 RS.

The car is code 65 Hugger Orange with black stripes and black interior, correctlycorrespondingto the trim tag. This car was built in Van Nuys Body Plant in Las Angeles CA. The car was completed the first week of April 1970 (04A car) and delivered to Russ Lyons Chevrolet in Boulder Colorado: official GM production date 04/06/1970. It has the correct Z/28floor mount gas pedel, 8,000 rpm tach w/ 150 mile per hour speedometer! Correct Z/28 COZ code 12 Bolt #3969341NF rear end dated within 3 weeks of the build date of the car. Correct Z/28 factory welded rear sway bar brackets and correct Z/28 rear bumper guards. This car also has Correct U14 Z/28 Special Instrumentation. Correct spare tire and jacking system are present in the car's trunk w/ correcthounds-toothmat, detailed under carriageincludinginspection striping and striped drive shaft, and correct GM part numbered decals throughout.

This is theONLY1970 Z/28 RS split bumper 4spd console car on Ebay that I can find which has the correct numbers matching date coded engine, transmission, and rear end. I have checked the 2019 Scottsdate, AZ Barrett Jackson line up and the entire internet and cannot find another 1970 RS Z/28 that is both 4spd console car and one that also has the correct date coded numbers matching engine, transmission and rear end. You will find most 1970 Z/28s are automatic, and if you find a manual car it normally will have an incorrect engine and/or transmission and/or will not be a split bumper RS car and/or will not have a center console. The automatic 1970 Z/28s are not nearly as sought after or desirable as the manual cars. All 1967-1969 Z/28s were manual cars. Due to the lack of appeal and the over abundance of 1970 Z/28 automatic cars: they are not worth nearly as much as the manual Muncie 1970 Z/28 cars.

If you truly want a special and rare collector car to put up as a sound investment, I would say you have found it! Hugger Orange is a good color in the collector car industry for resale value. Do not buy that new $60,000 pickup truck or newer Camaro that will lose half its value or more in the first few years you own it. What kind of sound investment would that be? Buy a piece of American muscle that has been more sound and stable than many stock market or IRA investments over the past 50 years, that is increasing in valve by more than 1000% return on investment. Furthermore, and be honest, which would you rather show your buddies: your stock portfolio, or this car setting in your garage?

I have watched these 1970 Z/28s appreciate at a rapid rate during the past 5-10 years. This is the second I have owned and one of my favorite all time cars. I am selling this car to pay off some business debt. However, I will probably regret selling this car. Collectors are beginning to catch on to the uniqueness and rarity of the 1970 Z/28 RS with ONE YEAR ONLY 12 bolt rear axle and solid lifter 11.0:1 compression ratio engine with 780cfm dual feed Holley carburetor--as already mentioned production was around only a 3rd of the 1969 Z/28 production and power output was around 25% higher from the factory on a 1970 Z/28 than a 1969 Z/28 . I think we will see 1970 RS Z/28s in excellent condition will sell for over $100,000 within the next 10-15 years, maybe sooner. It would not surprise me if these cars like a 1967 Corvette L88 will one day (possibly sooner than I think) command high six figure prices. I was involved in 2018 with the sale of a 1969 RS Z/28 that sold on the Mecum block for $104,000. I think these 1970 Z/28 RS cars are beginning to move on the 1969 Camaro Z/28 RS, and will surpass them. Now is likely a good time to get in on one of these special cars and enjoy it before they get too expensive.
