After witnessing the runaway success of the Ford Mustang, General Motors executives swung into action to create a sporty pony car of their own, that would take on the Mustang on the sales floor, race track, and drag strip. By this time, sales of the revolutionary Corvair lagged amid negative press and Chevrolet needed a new, but conventional car to fill the segment. In September of 1966, the new Camaro made its debut, and finally GM fans had a mid-size sporty car to be proud of. Like the competition from Dearborn, the Camaro offered a wide range of engine options stretching from the economical 230 cubic inch inline six through to the mighty 396 cubic inch big-block. With a generous option list, three standard trim lines, and a wide range of colors, buyers had near-infinite possibilities to create their perfect Camaro. Sales were robust, so GM held course with 1968 model, making only minor changes to the lights, ventilation system, and option packages. Like it's cross-town pony car rival from Ford, the Chevrolet Camaro is one of the cornerstones of the collector car hobby, with vast aftermarket support and legions of loyal fans around the world. Presented in original and unrestored condition, RB Collection is very proud to offer this 1968 Camaro SS coupe. This car comes to us from the son of the original owner, who purchased it locally from Stanley A. Strohl Chevrolet in Fogelsville, Pennsylvania. His father checked off quite a few boxes on the option sheet, including the SS equipment pack, 350 cubic inch V8, 4-speed manual transmission with center console, vinyl roof, AM radio, and sports dual exhaust. A copy of the original invoice shows the brand new Camaro SS cost $3,103.98 out the door. This Camaro remained a cherished part of the family for the following 37 years, amassing just under 41,000 miles during that time. In 2005, the family sold the car; however, it remained in the Eastern Pennsylvania area, and in 2016 the original owner's son was able to buy the car back. He was delighted to find the car just has his father kept it; in exquisite, unrestored condition, with a mere 400 additional miles on the odometer. The original Teal Blue paint looks fantastic on this car, which still presents in outstanding condition. The body is crisp, with straight panels and consistent, factory-appropriate gaps. Similarly, the black vinyl roof is beautifully preserved thanks to years of meticulous care. This car also features the optional SS package "Hockey Stick" stripes in white. The exterior chrome is unrestored and in excellent condition, and rounding out the purposeful, classic look is a set of authentic 1960s-vintage Cragar SS wheels, which have been on the car since it was nearly new. Purists fear not, as the factory original wheels are included in the sale. Like the body, the black vinyl interior is unrestored and in remarkable order. Black upholstery on the seats, door panels, and console is all in fantastic condition and the carpets are tidy, protected by rubber mats. Period accessories include an add-on 9,000 RPM tach, auxiliary gauge set, and wood shift knob. The factory radio and woodgrain console trim are in fine order. Interior fittings, gauges, and switchgear are all as expected of such a finely preserved car as this. This car retains its original, 295 horsepower 350, mated to a 4-speed gearbox and Positraction 3.73 rear axle. Under-hood presentation is excellent, appearing tidy and clean with mostly original hardware and fittings, along with signs of regular service. It runs and drives very well, with the feel of a car that has covered just 41,394 miles from new. A copy of the original invoice, as well as the original owner's manual and Owner Protection Plan are included. We are very pleased to offer this incredibly rare opportunity to acquire an authentic, unrestored, low-mileage Camaro with just two-family owners from new. Few examples have survived unrestored, unmodified, and in such beautiful condition.
