SUMMARY
Authentic Chevelle Super SportIn order to optimize your experience in the collector car hobby, you have to cover a few basics. First, there's power. The best thing about a storied Detroit muscle car is the thrill of its legendary V8. Secondly, there's appeal. Nothing quite matches the pride of turning heads while rumbling down Main Street. And third: there's longevity. It's always best to wrap power and appeal in a quality restoration that'll provide years of reliable cruising. When it comes to hitting those essential tenets, this imposing Chevelle is an excellent proposition. It nails the power part of the equation with a 580 horsepower big block that was built by Cox Racing Engines. Appeal is certainly no problem, since it's an authentic 138 Super Sport that's decked in glossy red 2-stage. And longevity is virtually guaranteed since the car, professionally restored in 2006, has been tweaked, sorted and polished for over a decade. What's better? Thanks to our asking price, this Chevy's lucky new owner can score a killer classic without breaking the bank!
BODYWORK/TRIM
The beneficiary of a detailed, body-off restoration that was completed in 2006, this vivid Super Sport wears fresh door skins, fresh quarter panels and a fresh trunk floor under smooth, red 2-stage. Despite its brutal drivetrain, the car's trim and ornamentation remain mostly as the General specified. At the front of its body, a black Super Sport grille hangs traditional halogen headlights and a prominent "SS396" emblem above a bright chrome bumper, small parking lamps and a subtle chin spoiler. At the top of the car, a chrome-trimmed Super Sport hood drives a small "CHEVELLE" header in front of like-new glass that's caged in straight stainless frames and polished stainless wipers. At the sides of the car, ornate fender emblems and quarter-mounted "Super Sport" scripts hint at the true nature of the big block's personality, while tasteful door handles and a duo of bowtie mirrors perfectly complement dent-free wheel lips and correct Super Sport rocker moldings. And out back, a black Super Sport valance hangs finned taillights and a second "SS396" emblem above a second chrome bumper and crystal clear reverse lamps.
ENGINE
Few cars fit the 'muscle car' description better than a Chevelle. Clocking in at exactly 496 cubic inches, this coupe's buff mill, built by the pros at Cox Racing Engines, twists 580 horsepower into an epic 600 lb./ft. of torque. A rich mixture of oxygen and fuel is supplied by a big Holley 4-barrel, which floats between stainless fluid lines, and a polished and decaled air cleaner. That carb rides on a proven Edelbrock intake, which is mated to a Chevy Orange block via cast iron heads. Those heads hang cast aluminum valve covers between polished breathers, hydraulic roller lifters and Hooker Competition headers. Inside those tubes, a tough Scat crank turns tough Scat rods around a Comp hydraulic roller cam. At the back of that cam, a traditional points distributor bounces spark through 7mm Hi-Temp Radio Suppression Cables. In front of those wires, requisite V-belts spin modern power steering beneath a stamped and rebuilt alternator. There's a beefy radiator that makes excellent use of pliable hoses and reproduction tower clamps. And all that first class hardware is detailed with items like a fresh brake booster, a Trick Flow fuel filter and a modern DieHard battery.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
That impressive powertrain spins torque through a reliable Centerforce clutch to a familiar Muncie 4-speed. That transmission is hooked to a tough, 12-bolt axle, which is fitted with a posi-traction differential and friendly, 3.55 gears. That drivetrain rolls on a traditional double A-arm front and 4-link rear suspension, which has been bolted to a fully powder-coated frame. The car's modern power steering is augmented with a quick-ratio gearbox. Stops are provided by power-assisted discs and power-assisted drums. The aforementioned headers dump spent gases in to stainless exhaust pipes, which hang a small, X-shaped crossover in front of polished Magnaflow mufflers. And at the corners of the car, stainless-trimmed Rallys spin 235/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 275/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.
INTERIOR
Pop this A-Body's solid doors and you'll find a Medium Red interior that's a true thing of beauty. In the middle of that cockpit, taut vinyl buckets are in excellent shape and show little to no signs of wear. In front of those seats, a color-keyed dash hangs standard telemetry and a small, aftermarket tachometer between a fresh pad, stylish trim and a modern, direct-fit radio. At the base of that dash, fade-free carpet floats thick floor mats between stainless-trimmed foot pedals and a V-shaped console that's centered on a long Hurst shifter. At the sides of that carpet, stainless-trimmed door panels hang bright handles and simple armrests above Fisher-branded sills. In front of the driver, a correct Super Sport Steering Wheel spins a color-keyed rim around an SS horn button. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk hides a fresh mat beneath a full-size tire.
