1991 Chevrolet Suburban 2500 4WD 5.7L 4.11 Factory Gears
1991 Chevrolet Suburban Silverado Description
Used, As-Is, 1991 Chevrolet Suburban, 2500 (3/4 Ton), 4WD, 5.7L 350 CI Engine, 4.11 Factory Gears (special order). I bought this from my family in 2002 and decided to rebuild it when I used to have more time. The truck was repainted (and now rusty in the wheel wells and other areas - please see pictures). Door handles were removed (shaved) and replaced with a remote opener that works on all 4 doors. There is a way to pop the hood manually and open the drivers door from the engine compartment in the event of the need to replace a dead battery. I put in a re-manufactured 5.7L/350 CI engine with a bored out throttle body (fuel injected) and new chip that was supposed to have around 300HP. (Factory was 210HP.) It has about 45,000 miles since the rebuild. It doesn't smoke or leak or burn any oil that I'm aware of. The truck starts right up every time and the engine runs great and the transmission shifts perfectly. The transmission was rebuilt by Cottman Transmission in 2010 and has about 16,000 miles on the transmission with an extra-deep B&M aluminum pan. I used to tow a 23ft boat back and forth to Lake Erie and the Cumberland area once a year with no issues. It has an electronic fan instead of the factory engine-mounted one, with temperature gauges for both the engine and transmission. The brakes pull slightly to one side at higher speeds and under load, but otherwise stops fine. There are brand new brake calipers, pads, and slotted/drilled performance rotors that come with the truck. I did replace the rear brake lines as they rusted through a few years ago. I'd probably recommend replacing the front ones just out of caution.
Heat works, the A/C does not. I was quoted about $600 to replace and upgrade the A/C compressor but never got around to it.
This truck has a LOT of rust - welcome to Ohio. Please see pictures.
The rear tailgate has been replaced from LMC truck and a new window motor has also been installed. However, the new tailgate does not line up perfectly and needs to have the brackets adjusted where they mount to the frame but again thanks to rust, they will probably need to be drilled or torched out to put new bolts in. The tailgate closes completely and is can be driven fine, but the window won't go up all the way because of the alignment. There is a tarp that has been duct-taped to the back window so water doesn't get into it.
The engine was converted to dual exhaust and has a air/fuel meter in the dash just to monitor it - no issues, the engine runs great. One of the mufflers broke off or rusted through at the back and part of the exhaust needs to be welded back on (or replaced with a new muffler).
The interior is good/fair. The seats are pretty good and original. No tears or burns or anything. Just some regular wear (a lot less than you would expect after 320K miles!). Carpet was replaced but I wasn't really happy with the quality, but it's OK - again please see pictures.
There are a bunch of brand new parts that come with the truck including all the patch panels from LMC truck. I just got too busy with work and family and never got around to fixing everything and decided to let it go. My loss is your gain. If you are good with body work and welding or want to find an old rust-free 73-91 Suburban out in Arizona or someplace not in the rust belt, this is a great project vehicle.
New wheels and tires in 2007 but the tires are starting to look a little dry-rotted and should be replaced. Otherwise, get plates and insurance and drive this home. Tires hold air and never have went flat but I don't know how long I would trust them. The spare tire has never been used that I'm aware of and is the original from 1991.
