By 1962, Chevrolet had a "grand plan" to build the Grand Sport, a Corvette race car specifically designed for snake hunting. Carroll Shelby's Cobras were dominating Corvette at race tracks from coast to coast and Chevrolet needed an antidote for snake venom. Head to head the Corvette was no match for Shelby's Cobra which was nearly 1,000 lbs lighter and far more balletic in corners compared to Corvettes rigid fiberglass body. pride, Zora Arkus-Duntov, Father of the Corvette and his fellow engineers set out to construct 125 ultra-light Grand Sports to meet GT racing requirements under international racing rules. Duntov and his team lopped off 1350lbs., stuffed a 377 cubic inch aluminum V-8 into the engine compartment with 550 bellowing horsepower. When it was completed the Grand Sport was capable of beating anything except GM executives who parked the program after just 5 Grand Sports were constructed. Duntov stubbornly refused to scrap the Grand Sport and sold two of the three originals to future racing legend Roger Penske and his race team. However, without factory support, the Grand Sports never truly reached their full potential. They did reach their full sales potential however. Miraculously all 5 originals are still in existence and are estimated to be worth $9-13 million on the open market.
Today, a precious few people have the opportunity to see and feel the same sensation that names like Penske, Yenko and Foyt enjoyed in competition. By virtue of a precise re-creation, this GS-2 is built off the original blueprints ad employs the exact center tub from the C-2 Corvette Sting Rays. while not as valuable as the originals, the GS-2 has become an important and rare collectible in its own right.
