Take a look at this amazing 1972 Chevelle. This is a genuine SS454 as indicated by the W in the VIN (only 1972 model years had this callout). It has been through a complete nut-and-bolt restoration with lots of engine and equipment upgrades; FAST 2.0 fuel injection, rack and pinion steering, tubular suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes, Ford 9” rear, modern air conditioning, and lots more.
This car hails from North Carolina where it underwent a comprehensive rotisserie restoration completed in 2010. A few photos from this work are shown towards the end of the gallery. The car was totally disassembled and rebuilt from the frame up. Any comprised metal was replaced. The entire body (top and bottom) was repainted in Cranberry Red, along with white SS stripes under the clearcoat. This Chevelle also has the correct SS badging along with hood pins and polished aluminum wheels.
This model was ordered from the factory with the LS5 454ci engine rated at 365hp, which has been replaced with a high performance 496ci powerplant. At restoration, this engine was a racing type build with high compression pistons and a large solid lifter camshaft, further augmented by a nitrous bottle in the trunk. This proved a bit much for regular driving, so it was rebuilt less than 20 miles ago to make it more street friendly (though still very potent). Equipment includes high flowing Brodix aluminum cylinder heads, a Dart aluminum intake manifold, and a Competition Cams 292 Magnum camshaft. There is also a complete FAST 2.0 fuel injection setup coupled with an MSD ignition. This is a user friendly self-tuning system that provides touch screen monitoring and control from inside the car.
The engine is backed by a TH400 automatic transmission feeding a Ford 9” rear end. Steering has been converted to a power rack and pinion setup. There are Wilwood power disc brakes all around with extended wheel studs. The front suspension has been upgraded with Global West tubular control arms while the rear uses Hotchkis components. The high capacity aluminum radiator uses dual electric fans controlled by the FAST unit, while the exhaust features ceramic coated headers and electric cutouts. There is also a line lock for a little extra fun.
Of course the entire interior was redone as well; seat covers, door panels, carpet, headliner, etc. It retains a stock appearance except for an underdash oil pressure gauge and the FAST screen (which can be mounted anywhere or removed completely). There is also an ididit tilt steering column and an aftermarket digital radio. The Vintage Air control panel integrates right into the dashboard. Note this unit provides complete heat, defrost, and air conditioning. The 3-spoke steering wheel and horseshoe shifter are classic Chevelle items that always look great.
This Chevelle has so much going for it; a real SS454, a frame-off restoration, and an impressive list of upgrades coupled with excellent looks, sound, and performance. Further, this car represents one of the most desirable cars from the era, though with features like FAST 2.0 and Vintage Air it is much more refined than its predecessors. It all makes for a Chevelle SS that not only screams “muscle car” but is also a pleasure to drive.
