This is a true California truck being built in Fremont,CA at the same facility the builds Teslas today. The truck was special ordered with specific options and delivered to Bob Frink Chevrolet 110 miles northeast in Sacramento,CA. The truck has resided in the Sierra foothills and passed down within the same family for the last 42 years. The original owners dream truck was this 78 Stepside he enjoyed the outdoors and camping and the truck had to fit the needs and demands of camping in the Sierra Nevada mountains. He ordered the truck as such, it had to be Red, had to be a step side it had to have a 350 V8 with the heavier duty Muncie SM465 4 speed manual transmission, had to have 4 wheel drive with a np205 transfer cas, had to have a tachometer and manual windows, had to have 3:73 gearing with a locking rear end, had to have dual gas tanks. If you're familiar with the Sierra Nevada mountains these options make all the sense in the world to properly enjoy the beautiful scenery they have to offer. Upon taking delivery of the truck some additional options comfort items were added as well, like a gun rack, a dealer installed Air Conditioning system as well as a camper shell to go camping in with protection from the elements. Fast forward 42 years this truck still has all the original equipment is was ordered with as well as the original Cardinal Red paint that was applied back in 1978. The camper shell has been removed, whats amazing is 42 years on the truck it has protected the inside of the bed as the wood is even still Cardinal red. Millions of square body trucks were built throughout the 70s and 80s; most of them were poorly optioned, many of them are gone forever, lots have been restored and swapped, but honestly how many really are still around that were optioned with all the right equipment from the factory and yet still are original? That is a much lower number and to go find a duplicate of this truck would be pretty hard. They are only original once and 42 years is a long time.Highlighted RPO Codes:VIN: CKL148Z209587Z= Fremont,CAGT4: Rear Axle -3.73 RatioLS9: 350cid V8 4BNL2: Auxiliary Fuel Tank7DL Cardinal Red Solid PaintG80: Locking Differential Posi tractionMM4 Four Speed Manual transmissionU16: TachometerVF1: Chrome Rear BumperCosmetically this truck garners attention everywhere it goes. There is something about a Cardinal Red 4x4 step side that just looks right. The paint is original and looks great. This truck is a 42 year old 4x4 truck and is by no means perfect, it has 42 year old patina there are dents and dings and spots where the paint has faded away. What you see is what you get the truck has never been into a body shop there is no bondo or body rot. The fact it had a camper shell on it preserved the Red paint on the wood inside the bed which is not common, paint on step side wood bed peels off rather quickly and the fact its still very red is a testament to how well that shell preserved it. The original white lettering for CHEVROLET on the tailgate is still very much present. The "Unleaded Fuel Only" stickers are still present. All the original chrome bumpers, Scottsdale emblems, grille all look great. The original rally wheels were replaced with 15x8 steel wheels and hubcaps and wrapped with brand new 32/11.5/15 Mud terrain tires, just because I liked them however if you would like the Rally wheels instead I have them and can switch them back per request.Stepside inside this rig and the interior looks great. All the original Cardinal red metal shines nicely. There are no cracks in the dash all of the gauges are functional. The original carpet has been replaced and is brand new with no rips or tears. The seat looks great with no rips and is plush and comfortable. The seat did have a seat cover on it which for the most part protected it except for a few spots that were not covered and got sun stained.Mechanically this truck runs and drives great The motor is the original 350 that came with the truck in 1978, as with all 1978 Chevy 350s it is still Blue. The motor has been rebuilt and bored .30 so technically it is a 6.0 liter and not a 5.7 anymore. It runs strong and has been maintained throughout its life. As mentioned earlier the truck was optioned with the heavy duty Muncie SM465 4 speed transmission and it shifts great. Overall its a good mechanically sound 42 year old truck. This listing includes well over 150 detailed photos in various lighting and the vehicle has been described as descriptive as possible.
