After nearly 17 years of selling high-end classic cars, muscle cars & hot rods, I rarely if ever get attached to any of the cars that come through my dealership. However, I held on to this jewel as long as I possibly could, as I really loved having it sit on my showroom floor, and know that I will never come across another example like this again.
‘Red Hills Rods & Classics’ is very proud to offer you this absolutely gorgeous, all numbers-matching & fully documented 1965 Chevrolet Malibu SS 327/350hp L79 2-Door Coupe! She was sold new on August 5th, 1965, at O’Leary Chevrolet Co. in Yankton South Dakota, and this gorgeous 1965 Chevrolet Malibu SS L79 has never been advertised on the open market. If you have been searching for a real L79 car, I am sure that you realize that 99 of 100 are phony, w/ no authentic documentation to prove otherwise. We have all seen what the ‘real’ 1966-1967 Chevrolet Nova L79 cars are bringing these days, with the 'real' documented examples bringing six-figures all day long. This pristine 1965 Chevrolet Malibu SS L79 car was the recipient of a recent frame-off rotisserie restoration & the final results are nothing short of spectacular! The 100% rust-free original sheet metal is super-straight all the way around the car, and the fresh factory correct (Code EE) Danube Blue Metallic is simply gorgeous, w/ a deep shine that goes on forever. This is one of the most beautiful shades that I have ever seen on a mid-60’s Chevrolet, as it appears black in the evening, but literally explodes in the sunlight! The chrome bumpers & stainless trim are excellent throughout, w/ enough shine to blind you! You can walk around this car a hundred times and never find a bad angle. It has the perfect stance, sitting on original 14” steel wheels w/ ‘SS’ wheel covers wrapped w/ Firestone P205/75/R14 tires, which are basically a radial version of the Firestone 70x14 Poly-Glas that came on the car when new.
When you open the driver’s door and slide into the gorgeous & factory correct two-tone blue bucket seat interior w/ console, you will swear that it’s 1965 all over again! The interior looks ‘as new’ & factory correct from front to back. All of the gauges, lights, blinkers, work perfectly, and even the lighter & factory dash-mounted clock works great! In 1965, most L79 & Z16 cars came w/ a tachometer in the center slot of the dash, so a clock was mounted on the dashboard. Again, this clock works perfectly and keeps better time than my Rolex! Please look closely at the photos of this outstanding interior to see how pristine it truly is! Now, let’s get the meat & potatoes shall we?
Pop open the hood, and nestled inside the beautifully detailed engine bay resides the original numbers matching 327ci/350hp L79 motor, w/ suffix code F0723EC 327/350hp (Flint Plant Date: July 23, 1965) as well as the partial VIN stamping. The factory original numbers matching L79 motor is linked to the factory original numbers matching Muncie M20 4-Speed manual transmission, which is stamped P0726 (Date: July 27, 1965) as well as the partial VIN stamping, which feeds power to the factory original numbers matching 3.31 Posi rear axle, which is stamped CF0610B (3.31 Ratio Second Week June 10, 1965). Of course all of these codes & stampings match the factory original Protecto-Plate, which stayed in the glove box for the last 51 years! The car was built in the last week of July 1965, and again she was sold brand new on August 5, 1965 to Mr. Daniel Frank and his wife Gloria. Back to the no-expense spared rotisserie restoration, please look at the undercarriage photos to see how nicely this car was done. No corners were cut & no stone was left unturned during the extensive restoration and it shows! You can lay mirrors underneath this car to show off, which is what I do while it sits on my showroom floor. She starts, idles, runs, drives & performs flawlessly in every way, and if I were to say that it was fast, that would be a gross understatement. This car hauls ass! I drove the car twice, once to check it out to make sure everything was functioning correctly, and the second time when I took the photos. I was absolutely amazed at the power & torque that came from this drivetrain! I immediately understood what all of the hype was about regarding the 327/350hp L79 motors! Factory equipped w/ 11 to 1 compression, solid lifter cam, aluminum high-rise intake manifold, Holley 585cfm carburetor, open air-cleaner, etc., and man let me tell you, they want to go, go, GO! These L79 cars actually ran quite a bit quicker than the 396ci/350hp big-block motors of the same year!
This rare all numbers matching & fully documented 1965 Chevrolet Malibu SS L79 car is one of the most sought after muscle cars of the mid-60’s, and to find an example that is beautifully restored such as this one, well it does not get any better, especially for those die-hard Bowtie fanatics! Documentation includes: Original Owners Manual, Original Protecto-Plate, Original 1965 Chevelle Chassis Service Manual, Original 1965 Chevelle Chassis Overhaul Manual, Original 1965 Chevrolet Custom Accessories Booklet, Original 1965 Chevelle Dealer Brochure, Original 1965 Malibu SS L79 Magazine Ad (scarce), as well as assorted original registration & loan documents when the car was purchased new!
