1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Concours
1968 Chevelle Concours sport coupe. "THE MYSTERY CHEVELLE". Built for only a few months and about only 4100 produced, that makes this car very RARE! It was a luxury option on the Malibu Coupe in 68. It has a Concours emblem on the steering wheel, (black and tan rectangle with a "fleur de lis" on top,) also the center cap in the 14 inch stainless steel wheel covers have the same black background concours emblem. Buick GS400 Interior, with a fold down center armrest. It has the long door armrests, 16 inch, Concours emblems on front fender sides, Concours nameplate on deck lid, with the extremely rare optional diecast finned trim piece between the brake lights. Wheel opening trim is painted black in the center, and other Chevelle options were thrown into the bargain, vinyl top, and bumper guards. GM didn't really acknowledge much in the way of literature on this weird trim package of 68 Chevelle.
For consignment one of 4,100 made in 1968 between the months of March and June, a Chevy Chevelle Concours which is essentially a little known option package offered up on the Malibu. A mixture of options and engine sizes were available but for the most part it appears as a Chevelle. A Buick interior, some special badging extra trimmings, vinyl top, and beautiful red paint. For the collector not much seen and obviously rarely ordered when available for the brief time in 1968.
Exterior
Dual headlights lead the way with the V grille in egg crate form and a large Chevrolet cloisonn badge in the center of the grille. Below is a perfectly preserved bumper with thin vertical guards and turn signals inserted within this bumper. On the steel sides which have well minded gaps, some extra trimming runs up and down and around wheel wells from front bumper to rear quarter. Slight Coke Bottle sides are showing up, and all bathed in deep red. A pristine black vinyl top is optioned on and has nice shiny stainless steel trim surrounds. Chromed side view mirrors are on each door and Chevrolet badged wire wheels are on all 4 corners and in the trunk is a like new spare.
Interior
A swing of either door, and a vertical tuck and roll panel which is molded creates the center of the door panels. Within this is a long (16 inch) arm rest, which has a shiny stainless surround and some extra trimmings around each plane with the lower panel being black carpeting. Inside we see the Buick GS 400 interior seating with a split back front bench complete with a fold down armrest in the center. This presents in black vinyl and is nearly perfect, as is the rear solid bench. If you look closely, you can see some of the subtle nuances of the Concours with the original steering wheel and its "fleur de lis" emblem, similar to a Pontiac Beaumont steering wheel, square gauge cluster and metal turn knobs. The dash is excellent as the carpeting below which is also in black.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a fully restored and showroom quality engine bay all shiny and black with no rust or even a hint of corrosion on any part. Hoses and wires are shiny and supple, and the GM red/orange block is present and accounted for in numbers matching 307ci V8 form. There is a single 2-barrel carburetor atop and a numbers matching Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission on back. The rear axle presents as a 10-bolt 3.36 standard rear.
Undercarriage
Fully restored now with no rust in sight, flat black floorpans and framing, a like new fuel tank, and all buttoned up structurally underneath. In front independent suspension with coil springs is on and on back a 4 link with coil springs. Power disc brakes were standard upfront, as were power drums for the rear.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and the engine runs as smooth as it looks. Nice acceleration and a comfy ride for this cruiser in a muscle car body, with some extra rare options on the Concours badge.
Rare Chevelle in the Concours in coupe form which was a short lived, non advertised Malibu option for this grocery getter, suburbia expanding car. All very nicely restored and very clean for the plucking right from our halls in the Classic Auto Mall. I bet you will not see another one, let alone if you are one of a few who have even heard of this option.
