1976 Chevrolet Nova Description
We bought this beautiful car back in 2010, and we have put a ton of time and money into it over the last 6 years.The car is a very nice driver, and gets a ridiculous amount of attention everywhere it goes.Due to the fact that this was not a sought-after generation of Nova's, it has proven to be very difficult to find replacement parts from the aftermarket.Also, because it's not just another Nova, Camaro, Chevelle, etc. it stands out as a unique classic at the cruise nights and car shows it has been in.This car is clean, reliable, extremely powerful, and fully-functioning.Over $20k invested.
The list of features is as follows:
•Custom-built 409 c.i. (stroked 383 ci Small Block), honed, balanced, and blueprinted.•Custom ported and polished Dart II heads with high ratio lift and shaft-mounted roller rockers.•Stiff "Z28" valve springs. Pistons are 10.5:1 hypereutectic.•Crank and piston assembly are on a 2-bolt main, and customized for weight balance, and clearance for stroke.•The motor has high lift/duration roller lifters and camshaft. It's a very aggressive cam.•MSD 6AL and ACCEL High Performance HEI with MSD 8mm plug wires and ACCEL shorty spark plugs (for header clearance).•Edelbrock Performer II dual plane intake.•Holley "Street Avenger" 700 cfm carb.•Holley chrome mechanical fuel pump.•Serpentine system from a 91 Silverado with clutch fan.•Hedman headers.•Full custom one-piece dual 3" exhaust with Magnaflow mufflers.•All accessories connected to the motor were replaced new with the build (alternator, clutch fan, power steering pump, water pump, distributor, fuel pump, intake, exhaust, four core aluminum radiator, Optima yellow top battery, etc.)...•The motor builder estimates 450 hp and even more torque output with the current intake.•He says that this motor could handle twice the carburetor with no modifications.•It has a distinct tuned muscle-car rumble. (The neighbors have complained to the police multiple times.)•Motor revs to almost 6000 rpm, and gains power from 1800 all the way through to the red line.
•HD 700r4 with 1800-2200 stall torque converter.•The 700r4 swap was done at the same time as the motor was built.Everything was done properly with the swap.•Custom cross-member that holds it in place.•Driveline was shortened and refurbished with new yolk and heavy duty u-joints holding it all together.
The only thing that hasn't been done (intended as the next project) is upgrading the stock rear end.A 3.83 or 4.11 rear end plus a bigger carb would make this car ridiculously fast.With current gearing, 4th gear (OD) isn't even necessary until 70 mph.The car purrs at low rpms on the highway, and actually gets decent mpg for what it is.
The interior was completely gutted and re-done in 2012.We got lucky and found an identical car with a flawless black interior at a junkyard in Kansas,and we were able to mix the red interior with the black pieces from the scrap car.We took the seats out and had them reupholstered by Mastercraft upholstery in Arvada, CO(they've done a bunch of work for the Denver hard rock radio station KBPI and Willie B).The interior came together nicely. It looks clean and stock, but with a nice custom feel.
While we had the interior gutted, went nuts and built an amazing stereo system.•Ten speakers hidden in the cab - 8 Rockford Fosgate smaller speakers (tweeters, and mid-range)•12" RF sub (sub bass)•12" Boston Acoustics sub that produces most of the low/mid bass.•All of these speakers are wired to three Rockford Fosgate amps, all in the trunk, powered by trunk-mounted capacitor.•JVC head unit with Bluetooth compatability, USB jack, hands-free calling, and CD/MP3 player.•Drive80 mph on the freeway with the windows down, turn up the music, and the music sounds amazing!
What else...• Stock power windows.•Heater core and blower motor were also replaced during the swap.•A/C is intact but not hooked up.•New Sun Tach with swap.•Grant GT steering wheel.•Tilt steering column.•New ignition cylinder lock.• 20% window tint.
Also done during the drivetrain swap:•Newshocks and brake pads, and rotors.•Monroe gas shocks up front, and Monroe air-adjustable shocks out back.
•Eagle Alloy Torque Thrust style 17" wheels•Hankook Dynapro Z-rated tires.
The car starts right up.It has about 2000 miles on the drivetrain swap now, is fully broken-in and dialed-in.
Registered at parents' address in northwestern Colorado so we wouldn't have to deal with emissions hassle.It can be made to pass. Just didn't want to waste time and money since we didn't have to.
Also, because it's 40 years old now, it should be possible to obtain collectors' plates.
UPDATE: We went as a family (of five) for a cruise last week. With the weight of all of us plus the three kids combined with the deep sump aluminum oil pan that was in it, we bottomed it out on the street leading in to our neighborhood, and cracked the oil pan.Because it was a deep sump pan, we had to pull the motor out.Since we had it out, we put it on a stand and went through it all over again (done by a reputable classic car mechanic).
The crank assembly, camshaft, rockers, pistons, cylinders have all been inspected; it has a brand new stock (tin) oil pan, new oil pan/front & rear main seal gaskets, flywheel cover, collector gaskets, and a fresh oil change. Call it extra peace of mind. No leaks. Everything is tight.
Nit-picky imperfections:• Multiple rock chips on the hood, and a few areas of flaking paint.• 8" scratch on passenger side door.• Reverse lights not functioning.• Passenger sidemuffler rattles against the floor board on bumpy roads. Needs adjusted.• Curb rash on outer lip of front passenger side wheel.• Two areas of poor body work above rain channel on rear passenger side window and above passenger side headlight.• Tires in decent shape, but suggest replacing in the next 5000 miles.• Horn nut connected at the steering wheel.• Rock chips in windshield.
Not many cars like this. It would be hard to replicate it, and wouldn't take much to make it perfect.
