1973 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Description

73 Z28, midnight blue, stripes added, 350ci, 4speed, 3.73 posi, 2.5in exhaust X pipe, no a/c, no tilt, no console
Bought it from near Poughkeepsie, NY area where I believe it lived its whole life. I use nastyz28.com as my main source for info about what the car should be. I like my cars to be pretty correct and not into the aftermarket bolt on replacement stuff so much. Not quite a purist where I have to have date codes matching etc but just like a correct appearance. This car is very correct and shows well but I need to focus on one car and let this one go.
Mileage: Approx 75000 or so. That is what is on the title but someone swapped the speedo so who really knows. 150mph speedo seams to have a weird odometer. Kinda sits between numbers on the first few digits.
Owned since November. Have no info on original owner but have the ownership chain from around 84 to present. The car was already in its current condition but I have rechromed the bumpers and grill trim, put the z28 emblem on the grill in the right spot. replaced a headlight, replaced Camaro emblem on the nose. just cleaned up a bit. Got a correct radio for it, not installed yet. I lost the keys while deployed so I swapped ignition and had locksmith make keys for doors/trunk. Passenger side door was slammed into a concrete pillar at the gas station so I have a nice door ding right on the body line near the door lock, grrrr. See pics.
Car was painted in 1990 and engine was rebuilt at that time I think. Estimated 10k miles since 1990. Unknown condition of body when painted. Have a lot of receipts from 84 to 2015. Lots of parts were bought from a local chevy dealer up there. Fenders, dash, door panels. Had a guy that looked at it a while back say that the door skins were done, according to him.
Strong points? Very nice looking car, sounds good, runs good, stops good. Turn key as is. Original tranny, rear, carb, distributor, heads. Block looks to have been dealer replaced with a CE 76 block. Engine runs good and strong. Car looks great inside and out and under the hood.
Weak points? well I like to find faults so this could get lengthy. Don't wish to turn people off to buying but just want to be thorough with my observations. Rust: Just took some pics yesterday of what is visible on body. very small. Small paint bubble at corner of rear glass. Some visible is a couple spots around tail lights. Have to look close. floors look to have been replaced. Only visible rust evidence underneath is in the rear of the rocker area and around tail panel area. Nothing that I would every consider needing attention but its there. Its all black under there with lots of original under coating still there. original gas tank and brake lines. Noticed recently that it smokes on warm days after driving for a good while. Have not tried to deal with this yet. Don't recall this happening in winter. Was going to check timing and carb mixture first.
Leaks some. Tranny for sure and engine oil a little. still looks good under there to me. Shifter is sloppy. Have a nice rebuilt unit to go with. I removed the back drive rod that rotates the column when shifting into and out of reverse. Got stuck in reverse so I removed and planned to deal with it later.
I think the car vibrates a little to much. Wondering if pressure plate/flywheel may be a hair off center. or drive shaft not quite true. dunno. just picky, may be normal for these old stick cars.
My list of stuff I want to do to the car:
Pull tranny and seal it up
Probably pull engine and seal up and repaint and check flywheel/pressure plate alignment
Freshen up the dash gauge area. Want to get correct speedo and tach in it. someone replace with 150 speedo and 8k tach
Replace shifter and fix back drive linkage at same time
Trunk does not stay lifted
Would be nice to get correct seat covers for interior, get a spare tire with correct jack etc
Some front end noise on bumps that I'd like to track down. Have not really looked into this yet.
