1967 Datsun RL411 SSS 4 door Sedan, Automatic, “Bluebird”
AS IS. Does not run. Offered honestly but with no warranty. Thank you, but we are not interested in a trade.
Photos were taken on site by unhappy relative who would like to resume complete ownership of driveway. Additional photos unlikely to be offered. It is every bit as bad as it looks but this is not a joke and we are sincere in believing that the vehicle is restorable by enthusiastic and willing new owner.
This vehicle was purchased used in 1969. It was driven until around 1990. At that time, it was in a minor fender bender and repaired, with some body work that was not an exact reproduction of the right fender so it looks more like a PL from the front. The original 3-part grill does not fit this altered front. My husband declared that no additional money would be spent on the car and that we should sell it but I could not let it go. Unfortunately, nothing was ever done to get it working again. The vehicle is currently in private storage from which it will be retrieved by new owner.
The car is a 4-door 4-cylinder automatic Datsun (not Nissan) RL 411 SSS (Super Sport) 1600 “roadster”, also called a Bluebird. There may be an argument against this name, but that is what our mechanic always called it. The choke is manual – you pull it out all the way until the engine warms up, pushing it in gently and slowly until the engine runs smoothly, at which time you should have pushed it all the way back. It has dual carburetors, which made it exempt from early California clean air requirements (NOX certificate). We have also been told that it has a “left hand ignition”. This can be important information when obtaining parts.Body: Many replaced parts (hood, 2 doors and trunk lid, all original just not originally from this car); substantially weathered paint; needs tires. Please see photos. This car is for real – it has been parked outside for many years and shows it but it is nearly complete and could be saved by the right person.
Interior: Very very worn. May be sufficient material covering seats left for patterns but very standard bucket seat design. Original interior is black vinyl with black carpet. Rear window shelf was recovered with headliner felt from another old car upholstery project. Very worn, as well.
Mechanical: 4 cylinder automatic. Was running when parked. Has not been driven since 1990. Needs complete overhaul and ground up restoration.
The car’s original owner purchased the 411 in Japan and had it shipped to the United States (Los Angeles, California). My father bought it for me as a college graduation present in September 1969, and registered it in his own name until I married later in the year at which time he transferred the title to me. I am, therefore, the third owner. I drove it daily in Southern California until my husband returned from Viet Nam in July 1971, when we moved to San Francisco, where it survived the Mission District hills. When we returned to Southern California, my husband drove it to work daily and later our teenaged son drove it while in high school until just after his graduation in 1990. It has been stored privately so our son could restore it, but he passed away in 2010, and we no longer have the heart to get it running. However, we would like to get it into the hands of someone who knows this car and wants to bring it back to life.
