1967 Datsun 2000 Roadster Description

1967 1/2 Datsun 2000 Roadster. This is a desirable model as it is estimated only about 200 of the roughly 650 1967 Roadsters imported to the US survive. This car sat since the early 1970’s in Southern California. I was told it waspurchased in 1970-1971 from Glendale or Granada Hills without an engine by the sellers father. HIs father had been collecting parts to put it back together since then and never finished the project.
I purchased the car as a vintage race carrestorationproject as the car was modified in period with flared rear wheel arches, multiple seat location holes, hood pins, and many modifications to the body in line with racing purposes.
Based on color of car and modification, the car appears to match a car run by the factory supported Datsun Racing Team runby Auto Works. The car appears to be the car of Jon Woodner, and then driven by Dick Roberts, who ran Nissan Comp, in the 1968 Run offs. The car was off the track before SCCA started issuing log books, so I have no documentation to prove the race history past the evidence on the car of modifications, color, and time frame of being in the right location at the right time.
Thishas been a three year project so far working on restoring the car to the current condition. The body was removed from the frame, the frame was installed on aRotisserie, then the framewas repaired, repainted, and suspensioninstalled. The body was then put on the Rotisserie and repaired. The floor panels were replaced with new panels that were bead rolled with the Datsun Griffin logo from the early Roadsters to add a touch of style. The rear flares were reduced to look closer to original body shape.
Then the underside of the body was stripped, repaired, and painted with satin black. As the car was getting closer to body paint it kept raining, so thedecision was made to rebuild the car for the street to be able to sort it out and get itrunning as the project had taken considerably more time than anticipated. The paint was stripped down to primer, any remaining visible dents or bodywork was straightened out, and primer re applied to the areas worked on.

The build included using as many original parts as practical and component weight wasgiven considerationthroughoutthe build. There is a speedometer and temperature gage, custom wiring harness for lights, turn signals, ignition, cooling fan, fuel gage, and fuel pump, A calibrated gas stick is used for fuel level as gage quit working. No heater or much else installed in car. Therear end ratio used was 3.9 with anopen differential matched to a four speedtransmission for weight, Theresult was an astounding weight of only 1,623 pounds which gives lively performance.
The car retains few stock or original parts as it was modified in period. The parts list from the build includes Nissan comp springs, Carerra Racing Shocks, Racing alignment including front camber, custom steering wheel, stainless steel braided brake and clutch lines, Airhart Magnesium master cylinder, tie down loops on rear spring mounts for towing, bucket racing seat, original date code 1967 seat belt installed. Leather was used for door stops, inner door handles, trunklatch, andhand lacedwiring harness cover. New exhaust from header back.
The Engine was purchased as a low hour rebuild. Then it wasdisassembled, inspected, the bores were honed, valves lapped, a hotter cam installed, and then painted. The pistons and rods appeared to be lightened and balanced. The SU style carbs weredisassembled, cleaned andinspected. The ignition was updated to an optical trigger high energy ignition. The compression appeared to be standard, and the car runs on premium gas.
Issues with the car: There is an oil leak at the back of the motor. I put cardboard down and get some oil, but the oil level has not moved. Thewindshield is cracked, chrome parts have surface pitting, tail lights faded and cracked. Somepaint wrinkle near mastercylinder, but have not found a leak, so may be a spill from lid seal or filling. One lug bolt is missing on rear wheel. Some light sheet metal warpage on front valence that does not show up well in pictures. Both doors appear to have been replaced as one has some welding for replacing inside door latch handle, color is different, andpassenger sidehas uneven gap. There is some cracking in the paint on top of the rear fenders and a paint crack along one edge of hood scoop. The car has a bit of road noise asthereis no undercoating or carpeting. Steel wheels have some rust pitting under the paint.
Additional parts are included in the sale, which are quite a few including hard and soft top, seats, and other misc. parts.
The car gets a lot of attention and thumbs up consistently. It has been driven about 300miles since the build and drives solid and reliable. Tires are old Yokohama A008 so would not recommend driving on them due to date code.
Thecar has a clear California Title and Registration.
