1973 Datsun 240Z Description

A very long story made short, I purchased the car 20 years ago missing everything from the firewall forward. It was to become my dedicated track car and a weekend cruiser. In these 20 years I've put 68 miles on the car. The last time I drove the car was Aug 2014. Today I have a 3 year old with another child on the way, and I'm having to admit the car will never see the driving it needs. Simply from sitting the front left brake caliper is dragging and the engine is not firing on all cylinders as the fuel injectors need to be cleaned yet again from sitting too long. I have a video from the last car show I drove it to in 2014 and in the four years since it has not left my garage. (https://youtu.be/cYJOfTO9ZVw ) (The video reminds me there is a rubbing sound coming from the rear of the car, and that the windshield is cracked, the dash is not cracked. I suspect the noise is bearing related because it goes away when you corner. This is an assumption and you can judge for yourself listing to the video.)
The Z is titled as a 1973, and the build date was late 1972. Since the car had nothing from the firewall forward today it has 280Z front fenders and hood, a fuel injected 2.8L, a ZX 5-speed manual transmission, Toyota 4-piston front brake calipers, a 1976 280Z fuel tank to accommodate the fuel injection, race springs (lower and stiffer), and polyurethane bushings.
I'd also like to bring to your attention that although the paint was color matched you can see the front fenders and hood are a slightly lighter red than the rest of the car. Also note the fuel door is missing. I have a fuel door for the car, but it is not painted. The wheels are 1981 280ZX turbo "snowflake" wheels. Tires were new in 2013 +/-, have almost no miles on them and are Yokohama S-drive's.

Edit: 1-2918 I've had a few questions about rust on the frame so I rolled under the car this evening and did find some light rust I did not expect to see. I also had forgotten that the passenger side floor pan has two patch panels.

Also I want to add to the listing, when I first got the car the battery box was rusty. The spot welds were drilled out, the box sandblasted and coated in fiberglass, and rather than re-install via welding and burn that area plus the body that had been primered with an expensive 2-part PPG epoxy the box was bolted in with stainless steel bolts. To me this seems like a great fix and has held up over the years.

I've also added two pictures of the body that show a area that could be rust. One is on the passenger side door, and the other just below the gas cap. I do not believe these areas have changed a bit in 20 years, which is not how I would expect active rust to act.

The Z does not have the stock exhaust manifold, it has a header. I believe the header is call a 3-2 header.

For those looking for more photo's, I'm attempting to share this link to a shared google drive folder. It has many photo's to what I would consider one of the best bodies you will find on a 45 year old car. It is hard to represent items in photos, but I think these do a good job showing the light rust that is under the car. My memory did not have an, even light, rust the entire car black underneath but it has probably been 5 years since I really took a look.

Question : Can I drive the car?

Answer: No, as stated above, the car does not start. I’ll emphasize that I am making an assumption to this being fuel injector related. The not wanting to go through this again was the final prompting to list the car on e-bay. I more correctly should have said: I drove the car into the garage 4 years ago and today it does not start. It could be related to items other than fuel. You will need to bring a trailer and winch/come-along. The video’s are to illustrate my belief you can bring this car back to running condition without too much work.

Question: Does the hood shut?

Answer: Yes, the hood does shut but with some difficulty. I would never close the hood other than driving down the road, that way it was easy to check oil, coolant, etc…
