WOW! We would like to take a moment to introduce you to this amazingly original time capsule 1970 Datsun 510 that is known lovingly by its one owner family as "Billy Jean". Billy Jean was purchased new by Fred for his wife Martha in Eastern Oregon off the showroom floor. Originally, this car was red and Martha really wasn't fond of the color, so Fred had the car completely painted in a green color that was to her liking at the Datsun dealership. Fred and Martha owned a large cattle ranch in Prineville, Oregon and this is where it has spent its life. This was Martha's car and Martha's only. It was her pride and joy that was always garaged and meticulously maintained. The car stayed on the ranch all of these years until the mid 1990's, when as Fred and Martha were getting elderly, they purchased a house in Prineville to be in town closer to city conveniences, family, and medical facilities. "Billy Jean" was still always garage kept and Martha limited her driving to trips to the store and to visit her sister. Unfortunately, I never had the privilege of meeting Fred and Martha, but from all of the wonderful stories that their daughter Dotty has told me, they really seemed to be an amazing loving couple that I wish I could have met. Dotty told me about a lot of adventurous stories involving Billy Jean and how her Mom used to take the kids fishing in this car after Church on Sundays. If you look closely, the trunk photographs show the remnants of the paper bag that has bonded to the trunk liner. Inside this bag I removed old vintage fishing tackle, hooks, and lures dating from the 1970's. Many of them still had their original price tag on them $0.09, $0.11 etc. It was really neat to see that! We could have replaced the trunk liner, but these little imperfections are all part of Billy Jeans nostalgic story that show the love she has received over the years. Fred and Martha have unfortunately passed on at 102 and 97, leaving this car to their daughter Dotty. Dotty is going to be moving and will not have garage space for Billy Jean and with a heavy heart, she has decided it would be best to offer this car for sale. I will be handling the complete transaction for Dotty. I have the free and clear title, bill of sale, and will manage the auction, shipping, funds, etc. This is the kind of car that enthusiasts LOVE and collectors DREAM of finding!
Billy Jean is a beautiful, one owner survivor car that was driven by an elderly woman sparingly and has received great care over the years. Nothing puts a smile on your face faster than pulling the manual choke and firing up the classic import 4 cylinder engine. This fires right up, does not smoke, and runs fantastic. It sounds like a bumble bee and makes you smile every time as it fires up. The odometer reading is 89,xxx and Dotty has assured me that these are the original miles!
Billy Jean is an early production 1970 with a manufacture date of 08/1969 which adds to the popularity due to unique corner marker lights and emblems. The quarter panel marker lights and front fender badge are unique through these early years.
The body is in really nice rust free condition with only small imperfections that I have highlighted below in close up pictures. There are a couple of small dings, lots of small chips, etc. ( see pics) but overall, very nice, original, and rust free. The body lines and gaps are truly amazing. They are very even and consistent. The floor pan and trunk pan are unbelievably nice, can find ZERO RUST. It is truly amazing! The paint is a complete color change that was done when it was brand new, so you can see hints of red in some of the undercarriage and edges where the paint is thin. Dotty told me that her brother's bicycle had an incident with the driver's front fender and that has been repainted at some point. The paint is far from perfect but shows very well considering its age. Over the years to keep Billy Jean at her best, there has been a couple of touch ups and any discoloration or haze I have highlighted in the photographs below. Remember this is a garage kept, one owner, low mileage classic import that is in very original condition throughout.
The interior of Billy Jean is in very nice original condition. The original headliner is in amazing condition and really shows like new! The seats upholstery is in great original condition and although it does show some wear, I can't find any rips or tears. It appears that the driver's seat has been reupholstered at some point with Datsun material and matches perfect. They are holding form well and the cushions are comfortable and feel great. The carpet is original and does show its age with some minor discoloration, worn spots, and has some thin spots. Not abused or dirty, just old and original. Dotty considered buying new carpet, but we decided to leave it original so you could see how honest the car is. The dash is in perfect shape with no cuts, warping or cracks anywhere. The arm rests and door panels are perfect, the latches and locks work well. This really gives the time capsule feel with the originality and the years of great care are apparent throughout. There are no strange odors, this car has never been smoked in. Pets were never allowed inside and the kids must have been well behaved, because it really is nice! EVERYTHING WORKS! The choke works flawlessly. The windshield wipers work, the factory original radio works, the heater works and selects modes properly. The gauges all work and light up as they should. All of the exterior lights including high beam, low beam, back up lights, turn signals, brake lights work correctly!
Billy Jean is an absolute joy to drive. Pull the choke, turn the key, (SMILE) and she begins to make that bumble bee purring sound. No smoke, runs smooth and drives every bit as nice. The clutch has a nice feel and functions well. All of the gears are smooth shifting and quiet. The brakes stop straight and true. No wanders to the left or the right. The steering and suspension are tight and predictable. The tires all show even wear and are approximately 90% tread with lots of miles left in them. I am amazed how smooth and quiet this little car is, but more importantly, how fun it is to drive!
Be ready to get lots of thumbs up and get noticed. Everyone wants to know about this car. Your neighbors will be green with envy!
