1975 Datsun Z-Series Description
I bought this car 17 years ago. I bought it from a kid who had thrashed on it a bit, but he had replaced the cam with something slightly more aggressive than stock, and the SU carbs with Webers. I always wanted to restore a z-car, and this was my third try. This one I bought because it was mostly rust free, and running well.
Then I happened to it. Now it is far from rust free and running well.
I'm not much of a mechanic, and I bought this car to fix that. I replaced the exhaust manifold with headers, and new exhaust piping all the way back. I put in both a sport muffler and a cherry bomb, to get the free flowing exhaust, without the excessive volume. I learned to weld doing this, and it shows. Those are some ugly welds. I wrapped the headers in tape, back through the cherry bomb, to keep the heat under control. I dropped, cleaned, and relined the gas tank. I was replacing the seats with something more modern(back then) they are Recarros, pulled from an Acura. They are not mounted, yet. I bought new carpet, and added soundproofing pads to them, but they are not installed, yet. They have been in a trash bag, in that car, for a decade. It had the dim headlight problem common on Z cars, so I pulled apart the wiring, and was wiring up a relay to resolve this, when other projects became much more urgent, and all progress stopped.
It was under a carport until 2010, and then out in the edge of a field from then. I won't lie, this has taken a toll. I included a picture of what the condition of it was before cleaning it up a bit. A good friend came out to help me, and didn't believe we could start it. But check oil, replace battery, (battery not included, it really doesn't fit.) squirt a little gas in the carbs, crank it over enough times, and it fired right up. That's where the good news ends. The clutch pedal is frozen. The choke cable is frozen. The hatch deck used to be very rusty, I intended to replace it. Now the hatch is frozen, so I expect it is much worse.
I put almost no effort into getting down to how bad the rust and deterioration are, I don't want to know, and I hurt my back. I'm not going to get into a position to look. Bid knowing that. It runs, but it could be rusted beyond repair. Or it could be only rusted at the points I documented. Yes I could get more $ if I dug into it a bit and showed the exact condition, but I am more interested in getting this out of here with minimal effort than maximizing sales price. That's why it's $1 dollar, no reserve. I can't help load this car when you trailer it out of here, but it's right next to the driveway, so you can get a trailer to it easily. The clutch pedal is frozen, but it's in neutral.
I keep seeing it and feeling guilty, but life is far too busy for me to ever pick this project up again. It's time this car went to someone who will do something more with it. Here's a quick video of it running:
