1973 Datsun Z-Series Description

You're looking at my 1973 Datsun 240Z coupe. Originally painted in highly desirable Avocado Green over Tan (Butterscotch) interior! Only ONE repaint since new! The car is all numbers matching with its original engine and 4 speed transmission. This is an early '73 and is fitted with twin round-top SU carburators, not the dreaded flat tops. The elderly gentleman that I bought it from owned and loved this beautiful car for 37 years before I acquired it earlier this year. I had planned on doing a light restoration and taking it back to its original Avocado Green color, but plans have changed with my family and I need to sell it. The story behind the color change is the last owner served in the military for 20 years way back in the day, and after owning it for about 10 years (purchased in 1983), decided he was tired of the "Army green" and had it painted in 1993 to the maroon color you see now. The pics you are looking at are of a 27 year old base coat/clear coat paint job. Nothing is hiding behind multiple layers of "God knows what" paint jobs and you don't know what you're getting! This car was only repainted that one time! Yes, ONCE in 47 years! I did however have the hood painted when I bought it because there was a ding on the front edge where many years ago a lady lightly backed into it in a parking lot, and it only made sense having the whole hood painted rather than trying to blend it in. It was only cosmetic, nothing structural at all. The rest of the car is still wearing paint from 1993. Looks great from 5-10' away, but upon closer inspection you will see the paint/clear coat is getting tired and really deserves a respray to look its best. Keep it maroon or go back to the original green (probably the way to go to keep it original and maximize its value!) like I had planned to do.
I had the seats professionally recovered in the correct tan (butterscotch) color a few months ago. These took a month to come in as they were custom made-to-order, and they used vinyl very similar to the original grain for the center sections. Apparently you cannot get the "exact" match any longer. It's very close and they look fantastic! All carpets are excellent. Door panels look very good but the chrome "tape" has peeled off (very common). Headliner is good but does have a very small cut near the center. Dash had 3 typical cracks where the gauge pods are, so I had a full dash cap installed. Original wood steering wheel is gone, but they can be sourced on here for about $200. For some reason two of the pod gauges aren't working, but the clock runs. Radio also isn't turning on, but it IS the original AM/FM radio! I'm thinking it's a grounding issue, but I haven't chased anything down. Speedo and tach work properly. Odometer reads 04,137 (has turned over once...it's 104,137) and may go up a little as I do enjoy driving the car from time to time. I recently took it on a 450 mile round trip to Hilton Head, SC and it didn't miss a beat! And, it was on a HOT 95 degree South Carolina Summer day! Ran cool and had zero issues! Other than getting a little sweaty and bored from no radio, the trip was awesome! The car starts right up with the first turn of the key (3 keys included). The 4 speed tranny shifts nicely and all synchros work well. Clutch feels good and does not slip. The car pulls strong in any gear. Brakes are very good, and emergency brake works well. Tires have lots of tread. All exterior lights work, as well as the interior dome light, map light and footwell light. Under the hood, even the original "inspection light" works! As an added bonus, my 240Z was delivered new with dealer installed AC (the factory never installed AC in '73). All components and plumbing are still there, however the compressor was removed years ago when the previous owner was doing some work and never put it back on. It is included in the sale, but needs the refrigerant fittings updated, unit installed and charged. I am also including a brand new Hyper Flex System complete Master Set of poly bushings. I paid over $250 for this, and it was my next thing to do on the car. This is the full kit with everything you need to freshen up the handling.
The car is exceptionally solid considering it's 47 years old and most of these have rusted away long ago. Places where these cars usually rot are very solid on this Z. All factory pinch welds are present along the lower rockers and inner rear fender lips! All inside fender wheel arches have factory crisp edges with no bondo. The dog legs, rockers, inside hatch corners, and spare tire area are rust free. Frame rails are also nice. The previous owner did have some metal work done to the floors in 1993 when he had the car painted. They are still very solid. Being garage kept and no Winter driving certainly helped preserve this car! Original steel wheels/hubcaps are long gone, but personally I love the gold mesh centers with silver lips! Classy and retro! The steel spare is original and I don't think it's ever been used! The backside of the rim is as clean as day one. I even think the tire is original and looks like it's never touched the ground! As you can see in the pics, the spare "wheel well area" is super clean and dry, and sports its original green color. Tool kit and jack are present in the storage compartments behind the seats. I also have the original owner's manual and factory service book!
This rare 240Z is a really nice example and is only appreciating in value! These have shot WAY up recently and this will be an excellent opportunity for someone to enjoy as is, or take to the next level quite easily. I hate letting it go as ones like this are very hard to come by! I wouldn't hesitate to drive this car anywhere! Like is said, I recently took it on a 450 mile trip with zero issues!
I will happily sell to over-seas buyers, however all shipping arrangements are to be made and paid for by the buyer. Clean and clear title is in my name, and in my possession.
Please ask any and all questions PRIOR to bidding. This is an auction to "buy the car", not to "think about it". I am running a NO RESERVE auction, meaning the last bid wins! Please only bid if you have permission from your significant other, and have all of the funds readily available to pay in full within 3 business days. I expect a $500 PayPal deposit immediately following the auction (so I know you're a legit and serious buyer), and the remaining balance is to be bank wired within 3 business days (my banking info will be provided once your deposit is made). No exceptions. Please do not bid if this will be a problem.
I will also entertain offers to end the listing early as I do have it listed elsewhere, and the auction can end at any time. However, please do not wait until the last few hours to reach out to me as I cannot end the listing once it's within the last 12 hours I believe. ***Please know the current Market before making any silly offers. I'm assuming if you're looking at this, you know what these are bringing these days. I like the excitement of auctions, especially the last few minutes when bidding can get crazy, so I'm kinda hoping it goes all the way to the end. But, if you don't want to risk losing it to someone else at the last second make me an offer I can't refuse!
I will keep the car safely locked in my garage at home until you can have it picked up. Also, once it's paid for in full, I will no longer drive it. Insurance will remain current on it until it is picked up. Car is located in Conway, SC just outside of Myrtle Beach. Zip is 29526 for shipping quotes.
Anyway, thanks for looking and happy bidding! Bid often and bid high! Good luck!
