1991 Dodge Stealth R/T Description

This auction is for an excellent 1991 Firestorm Red Dodge Stealth R/T All Wheel Drive Twin Turbo sports car. The car drives, brakes, accelerates and handles great. The A/C is cold; the heat is hot. It consistently gets an honest 25 miles per gallon on the highway.

Importantly, this car comes with a brand new motor: a newly installed completely rebuilt blue-printed OEM factory spec engine (only 35 miles total mileage on the new engine). The front seats have also been fully reupholstered in all imported leather. There are numerous other new parts as well (described below).

In short, this car is an exceptional, good looking, great driving, and reasonably priced AWD Twin Turbo Stealth that has had an easy life, been well cared for, and essentially needs nothing. It is ready to go to its new home and is truly FUN to drive! Should you win the auction on this car or buy it now, I’m confident you will not be disappointed.

I recommend this car not as a car salesman (I am not one) but as a car guy. I have had a half-dozen of these outstanding twin turbo GT (grand touring) sports cars, including this one and two others that I still own, and this one is as good as an unmodified factory spec car gets. (I can’t keep all three of my twin turbo cars, even though I’d like to.)

Detailed Description:

The powerplant is a transverse front mounted Mitsubishi built 6G72 3.0 liter intercooled twin turbocharged V6 engine with computer controlled electronic fuel injection, four overhead cams, 24 valves, and factory oil cooler. The gear box is a sturdy Getrag five speed all synchromesh manual transmission (transaxle). In addition, this model car has the fully functional factory all-wheel drive with hydraulic in-phase all wheel steering system, power assisted four wheel disc brakes with ABS, power assisted rack and pinion steering, an excellent cruise control system, and a driver side air bag.

R/T model creature comforts include automatic climate-temperature control (to manage A/C and heat) with manual override, bucket seats, power windows and door locks and driver’s seat and outside mirrors (heated), front and rear defrosters and intermittent windshield wipers, a tilt steering column, coffee cup holders in the center console, overhead reading lights, and vanity mirrors. The back seats fold down and create a truly large area for luggage/gear relative to most other cars of this type.

In addition to the well-optioned R/T model package, this particular car is also equipped with an original optional factory ultimate sound AM/FM cassette radio and amplifier with compact disc and three band graphic equalizer as well as leather reclining bucket seats (newly reupholstered).

History: This is a three-owner car. This car was sold new in 1991 to a Portland, Oregon area surgeon by Buff Chrysler-Dodge of Newberg, Oregon. In 1999, it was sold it with 54,267 miles on it to the owner of a Hurricane, Utah golf course. Both prior owners obviously took great care of the car. In 2014, I bought the car with 140,768 miles in excellent condition other than for a tired engine and a worn bolster on the driver’s leather bucket seat (typical for these Twin Turbo cars). Mileage on the car now is 151,795.

Technical Details:

The engine is newly rebuilt with only 35 miles on it for initial break-in and systems checks. Equipped as it is with OEM Mitsubishi 13g factory sport turbos and with the car’s turbo boost solenoid updated to factory specification, rated horsepower is projected as 375 net horsepower, which is an additional 75 net horsepower over the base stock twin turbo powerplant without these options. These added options retain the excellent low end performance while adding to mid-range and top. The engine installation is by the book and factory; all stock OEM engine and fuel management computers, systems and emission controls (including exhaust catalysts and O2 sensors) are installed and present.

The Getrag 5 speed transaxle shifts silky smooth and without synchro grind.

Nits and Picks and Fixes

As nice as it is, the car is not new. These are the only items left on my “list” of items on my “nits” list that I either ignore or would eventually address were I to keep the car as well as the “fixes” so far as I can tell:

SRS (supplemental restraint system) light on

- All my cars have this; so far as I can tell, it just comes on after a certain point but has no implications for driving the car; I choose to ignore it (some people disconnect the light)

Tiny chips in the paint on the front of the car

- This is the same as for any car from being on the road; they are not noticeable unless you look for them close up; I choose to ignore them; they go away of course when the cars eventually get repainted

Defroster vent cracks

- Every Stealth/3000GT I have ever seen has these cracks in the vents below the front windshield; it’s a cosmetic issue only; I choose to ignore it; the ultimate fix is to replace the plastic vents with metal ones

Washer fluid level indicator light is on

- There’s plenty of windshield washer fluid in the plastic reservoir and the sender is plugged in, but the low level light is on nonetheless; I have ignored it, but the obvious fix is to replace the sender with a new one, or simply replace the entire washer fluid tank with a new one

New passenger window regulator is slow

- Not really an issue, but the new window regulator is slow because I never use the passenger window; fix is simple: use the window

Although not a “nit” or problem, the factory exhaust is fixed at sport for max power; this setting is still quiet and civilized but avoids the known problem of the exhaust control cables getting permanently stuck in restricted/ow power mode

What’s included with the car:

Original window sticker

Original owners manual

Digital factory (Mitsubishi) technical manuals

Chassis

Electrical

Engine (6G72 V6)

Space saver spare tire

Jack and tools

Two keys

Price and Investment Considerations:

For what it’s worth, the NADA classic car guide offers a good idea of what this year and model of car tends to sell for these days. Equipped from the factory as this car is, the market prices range from about $5,000 (low retail) to $9,000 (average retail) to $16,000 (high retail). Given its new engine and otherwise very good condition, car people I talk to think the fair value for this car (fair to both buyer and seller) would be something more than $9,000 (average retail) but something less than $16,000 (high retail). I agree, and am pricing it (setting the opening bid) at $9995,00 which is less than half way between the average low and high retail and just a bit above average retail. “Buy It Now” is $12,993.50, which by listing rules is 30% higher than opening bid and still at the low end of what I know it actually costs to find a really good twin turbo car and get its motor and drive train in top condition.

I find it hard to believe, but if we want to go out and buy a comparably performing NEW factory all wheel drive twin turbo sports car today it will cost us more than $100,000. That means cars like the car in this auction which offer essentially the same fun driving experience can be owned for a tenth of what a comparable new car costs. Small wonder that the Stealth and 3000GT cars are appreciating now in value.
