1970 Dodge Charger RT Description

I am listing this Rare Hemi Charger for a friend. It is a fully documented, full ownership history, museum stored for over 35 years, all original, rust free, factory numbers matching, 426 Hemi, FC7 plum crazy purple, 1970 Hemi Charger!

One of 56 automatics built. One of 5 known plum crazy and the only known numbers matching automatic purple car.

Accident free, no rust, no patches, one repaint (1973) no excuse Hemi Charger. Possibly one of the lowest mile 70 Hemi Chargers on the planet. Matching numbers Dash VIN, Fender Tag, Buildsheet, Rad Support, Door Sticker, Trunk Gutter and Motor. Replacement non numbers trans but comes with an original hemi torqueflite. Previous owner changed the interior to white as all of his cars had white interiors. Very easy to bolt a charcoal/black interior back in. Born with numbers original 426 Hemi with its original carburetors, exhaust manifolds, distributor, aircleaner assembly, valve covers, 956 Radiator, etc….

Full chain of ownership since new, including original photos of the day the first owner purchased it inKansas. Also documented in late 80’s Mopar magazine by Jerry Heasley “Rare Finds” articles. I am still in contact with the first and second owner of this amazing car!

This Charger was inspected in 2016 and verified all numbers matching (except trans), authentic R-code Charger by Galen Govier's approved award winning Mopar restoration specialists “Rocket Restoration” Tom Hergert (OEM Mopar Judge).

Full History since the day this Rare Hemi Charger left the showroom floor in Kansas:

1970 Robert Ives purchases the purple hemi Charger automatic in the early 70’s off the lot at “Challenger Motors in Hays Kansas”.Challenger Motors,2000 Vine St., HaysKansas, 67601.CODE 166 shipping zone and $62.00 shipping price.

A gentleman ordered the Hemi Charger new but did not take delivery on the car so it was sitting on the lot.The gentleman that factory ordered the Charger wanted it to appear as a sleeper with no “Hemi” emblems, stripes or badges.Robert purchased the car brand new off the lot as his favorite color is purple and could not believe the look of the Charger & fell in love instantly he said.He was very happy with the car & it’s performance (always chirping the tires as it shifted) but then at 12,000 miles the oil pump failed.Challenger Motors replaced it on warranty.A short time after roughly 12,500 miles the oil pump failed again.This time Challenger Motors would not warranty the problem and advised him it would be many thousands of dollars to fix.Robert Ives was a young fellow working in the rigs, said he did not have any money to fix the Charger so he had the Hemi motor & trans pulled out & replaced it with a 440.He drove it for a short time & then sold the Charger to Hoar Motors,Hill CityKansas

Details from Robert:

• Some minor parking lot fender damage on drivers side
• Some other minor bruises, scrapes, etc.
• When he replaced the Hemi with the 440 the mechanic (shop) told him the Hemi Automatic would not work with the 440 motor so it apparently ended up at 1 of 2 salvage yards locally.
• Has photo of himself in front of the purple Charger when it was new.
• Robert visited the Charger many times at Jerry’s museum taking his girlfriends & wife to see his purple Charger that he loved.

Jeff Keith a young college student fromColby,Kansasbought the Charger from Hoar Motors,Hill City,Kansas

Jerry Jueneman tracked down or ran across Jeff Keith who complained of the 440 running poorly & drinking way too much fuel for commuting.

Jerry purchased the charger for $300 in 1974.Jerry contacted Robert Ives who had the original hemi motor with the issue.Jerry sent it out to a machine shop rebuilders had the problem fixed reinstalled & drove for a few hundred approx miles.

Jerry replaced the drivers front fender & hood (brand new from Chrysler) so Jerry said why not replace it.He put the brand new hood & fender on the Charger & the old hood which was fine on another 1970 Charger.

Fender had minor damage but cheaper to buy a brand new one.

Jerry painted the charger himself (body shop owner) in 1974. Jerry was a renowned expert bodyman painter and this was one of his favourite cars!

There were never any Hemi emblems on the fenders as the first owner Robert Ives purchased the Charger sleeper with no stripes, no vinyl roof, no hemi emblems from the Challenger Motors Dealership in Hays Kansas where the original Charger purchaser in 1969 never picked it up.Jerry added the Hemi callouts & blackout hood treatment when he painted the car in 1974 & added the hemi emblems when he found them at a swap meet many many years later…..post 1989 as evidenced by the photo of the charger in Jerry’s museum in the Mopar Muscle magazine.

The Charger sat in Jerry’s museum from 1974 to 1999.It was then sold to a couple who purchased the Charger & a 1969 White Roadrunner convertible (as seen in the photo).The couple never titled the Charger & sold it 2 years later (2001) through TRM Classics to Joe Stentella.

Joe had Dennis Kohr of Kohr’s Kustoms do some work & change the black interior to White.(Obviously Joe must have preferred white) too bad as Jerry said the interior was still perfect as only 13,000 original miles.Dennis also installed a white bumble bee stripe on the Charger for Joe.

Spoke to Dennis today 30 NOV 2016 from Kohr’s Kustoms.At Joe’s request Dennis pulled out the original charcoal/black interior & replaced it with a Legendary white interior.Joe loved white & purple (just like his 70 Superbee).

Dennis put the original interior into the Legendary empty boxes along with the bucket seats & stored them with all of Joe’s Mopar parts in Joe’s section of the shop/storage facility.

Joe sold the Charger to Bob who sold it to John on the West Coast who then sold it to the current owner.
