Up for sale is my 1970 Charger R/T V code 440-6 car. I bought this car from my neighbor’s estate in September 2017. This is the first time this car has been for sale to the public in 40+ years. Below is a detailed description of the cars known history, the work done to get it where you see it, and the good/bad of the car’s condition. There are over 150 photos detailing the condition of the car. I spent the last year getting it road worthy again with the original drivetrain installed. To date, I’ve put about 300 miles on the car- including it’s maiden voyage to Chrysler Carlisle in July 2018. The car took second place in the “barn finds” class.
History:
This car has been local to Central Pennsylvania it’s whole life. I have an engine rebuild receipt from Woody’s Speed Shop located in Camp Hill, PA dated 10/14/1975. The owner on the receipt, Dave Wagner, had the original 440 rebuilt with only 34,356 miles on the clock. He had a crower cam kit, Edelbrock Torker intake, Mallory ignition system, and a Holley 4779 carb installed for a total of $1,434.44 including the tow bill. Sometime in the early 80s, it was sold to my neighbor. The intake and Mallory distributor were still installed on the engine when I bought it. I bought this car from the estate of John Martz. I started renting a home in March 2017 next door to John’s property in Harrisburg, PA. After John passed away in May 2017, we began noticing cars being moved around the property. At the time, we were unaware that there were over 80 cars hidden – mostly Mopars. The property is heavily wooded, and it is barely noticeable from the road that there were over 80 cars hidden. It was also very difficult to see the large pole barn with a “Mopar Garage” sign on the door. This charger was one of 3 in the barn. The other two were a 68 318 car, and a 383 car. I was introduced to the estate owner and made a deal on the 6-pack car.
John was an interesting guy, to say the least. He liked to swap parts from car to car. At some point, he took the 440 engine out of the R/T and installed a ’64 426 max wedge. It is unknown when, or why. He also took the original Rally wheels off this car and installed them on his 11,000 mile Hemi GTX. (That car was willed to a close friend with the wheels still on it. It is unknown if he is willing to sell them.) He also liked stashing parts in cars that were laying around outside. For example, the correct 440 HP exhaust manifolds for this car were in the trunk of a ‘74 Cordoba. In the winter of 1993, the pole barn housing the Chargers collapsed, damaging the roof of the ’68. This car was untouched. It is believed this was the last time this car saw the sun before I pulled it out last year. Below are pictures of the receipt and the car when I found it and pulled it out.

Body:
This car retains its original paint and “C” stripes. The V21 black out hood stripes are still visible toward the cowl. The remaining original paint shines very nice, but this car does have its fair share of typical rust. Please look through all the pictures. It needs lower quarters, attention around the rear window, rocker patches, and a hood. The tail light surround has some rot, as does the rear valance. The car is very straight, with small dents on the passenger fender, passenger door, and passenger lower quarter. The frame, torsion boxes, and floor pan are very solid. The passenger toe board will need a small patch. The roof is very solid, as is the front windshield surround. The doors and front fenders are in great shape. I installed an AMD trunk pan in this car, but it does need final welding and grinding attention.
Chrome/Trim/Glass/etc:
The bumpers are excellent cores to be re-chromed. Both are very straight. The wheel opening mouldings are straight and in good shape. All the glass is in good shape. The taillights are perfect. The grill has one a few teeth missing/cracked in the front. I do have the original exhaust trumpets and they are in good condition as-is or re-chromed.
Engine/Transmission/Rear:
When I bought the car, the original 440 was stored in the basement. A water leak dripped water directly down the intake over the years. This motor had less than 4,000 miles on it when it was taken out, but it was locked solid. I spent over $3000 getting it completely rebuilt. It was bored .30 over with new TRW pistons installed. I had a Comp Cam XE268 installed. Receipts included in sale. I put about 300 miles on the motor. It runs STRONG. The carbs are not original. They were stolen at some point. It has an aluminum Edelbrock intake installed (with correct 69 code). I’ve read that some early build 6 pack cars came with an aluminum intake but can not prove it is original to the car. It also has a single point distributor. The car has a brand-new gas tank and TTI 2.5” exhaust system. I had the original 26” radiator re-cored by a local shop. The numbers matching 18 A833 18 spline Hemi Trans is original to the car. I changed the fluid in it. The Dana 60 is original as well. When I changed the inspection cover gasket, the unit was in incredible shape. Other new parts include: fuel pump, fuel sending unit, plugs & wires, heater hoses, tach wire, fuel line, battery, thermostat, water pump, fan clutch (have original w/ correct code), cap & rotor, professionally rebuilt carbs w/ promax metering block (71 auto outboard carbs, correct 70 manual center carb), and new correct throttle return spring. There is more that I forgot along the way.
Brakes/Suspension/Tires:
I went through everything brake wise. I had the rotors cut and installed new calipers and pads. The original calipers are included in the sale. I also installed new brake hoses, including the hose that connects the rear lines, a new line running from the proportioning valve to the rear, new master cylinder, and new rear shoes/wheel cylinders. The car stops as good as it did in 1970. The suspension is all original in the front. The rear had traction bars installed a loooong time ago. I haven’t been able to source the correct parts to put it back to stock. The wheels are period correct Vector knockoffs? The left side wheel studs are still the correct left-tight threads. As mentioned, I do know where the original wheels are, but have not tried to get them. The tires are BFG radial T/As with 300 miles on them. The fronts are 245/60/15, the rears are 275/60/15.
Interior:
The seats are original. The fronts need to be recovered. I installed a new carpet. The headliner will need to be stitched/replaced. The door panels are in great shape. The dash pad has a few cracks. EVERYTHING works, except the clock. All the gauges work. Even the AM radio and heater still work! All lights function correctly. The headlight motor wants to go but gets jammed up.
I have a clear title in my name for this car. It is currently located in Scranton, PA. I can show you the original property the car was found on if you’re willing to travel 2 hours south to Harrisburg. A $1000, non-refundable deposit is due within 48 hours of the auction’s end. Please don’t bid unless you are serious about the car. I am happy to show it to anyone seriously interested. Please email for additional questions/photos. This car is sold as-is with no warranty.
