1966 Dodge Polara Convertible 440 V8 Automatic A/C Buckets with Armrest
1966 Dodge Polara Description
For sale is my 1966 Polara convertible.
Originally a 383 4 bbl car, when I bought it the PO had swapped in a 73MY 440. I fixed a few minor oil leaks and installed a new water pump, radiator, hoses, oil pump, and rebuilt Carter Thermoquad (the correct carb for a 73 440 so the kickdown linkage would play nicely). I installed Scarebird front disc brakes (this thing stops really really well) the correct disc brake booster and master cylinder with new brake lines, hoses and rear wheel cylinders/shoes. I upgraded to 15 x 6.5" Mopar wheels from a 72 Polara and put on some beefy BFGoodrich Radial T/As. New dual exhaust from the manifolds back.
For a convertible I was shocked at what little rust this car had. I had to weld in new metal for the footwells, some photo evidence is provided. The trunk was very nice. The floors and trunk area have been treated and now coated for future rust proofing. Sound/heat insulation was put down inside the car before the carpet was laid, it helps quite a bit. Brand new top, carpet, trunk mat, sill plates, seats, door panels, arm rests, inside handles etc. Also installed new convertible top hoses. Driver's seat is a power adjustable unit that I took from a 67 Chrysler.
The interior looks really sharp but it makes the unrestored dash look dull. I had the radio restored and they added an auxiliary cord. I can plug in my phone and play tunes through the center dash speaker, works pretty well because where I'm at there is near nothing on AM radio. All gauges and lights work as they should. The car runs and drives (it really scoots with the 440) like it should.
I replaced the engine wiring harness with a reproduction from Evans and added electronic ignition and rebuilt distributor at the same time. A rebuilt "square back" 65 amp alternator was added along with the ammeter bulkhead bypass to preserve the car's wiring and brand new bulkhead connectors I painfully installed. Every terminal was cleaned and packed with grease before re-installation. A relay was added for the power seat motor. With the alternator upgrade it will charge at idle with the lights, radio and a/c on. A new high torque mini starter was installed.
I changed the schrader valves in the a/c system, installed a new drier, vacuumed the system, re oiled the compressor and charged with R12. It blows ice cold now.
The miles will go up as I plan to continue driving it until it sells, and I will continue to improve upon the car. There are some additional parts not shown that will be included with sale (for example the missing LH taillight reflector that needs to be glued back in). If you have questions please ask! If you want to come see it in person before bidding, please do so!
