Instead of a large, front-mounted V-8 engine, the Stealth R/T came with a twin-turbo V-6. As a collaborative effort between Chrysler and Mitsubishi, Chrysler was responsible for the Stealth's exterior styling but still had the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 powertrain. This particular Stealth was sold new in Arizona and has been in the dry state since. The previous owner had the car since 1995 and it currently has 98,652 actual miles, sold on an actual mileage box A Arizona title.
Built in Nagoya, Japan and dressed in Firestorm Red, this example’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition. The car has a solid and straight body, an extremely tidy engine bay, the battery appears new, its cargo area is in very good order, and its pop-up headlamps and body-colored bumpers look great.
This Stealth wears 235/45ZR17 radials at each corner. Each one is mounted on factory alloy wheels with black center caps. The tires are in very good order while the wheels are in good, original shape. Safety features include a driver’s side airbag and a center high-mounted stop light (CHMSL).
Under the hood is a twin turbocharged 3.0L DOHC, 24-valve V-6 engine producing 300HP. The motor is mated to a new Getrag five-speed manual transmission with a new clutch, a limited-slip differential and it has all-wheel-drive. Driver convenience features are long – automatic climate control, cruise control, power rack-and-pinion steering, power four-wheel-disc brakes, power locks, power windows, power and heated sideview mirrors, tilt steering column, rear defroster, rear wiper/washer, remote hood, hatch and fuel filler releases. Other features include four-wheel-steering, fully independent and electronically adjustable suspension and electronic exhaust baffles.
Inside, the car’s gray cloth interior is in overall very good order. The bucket seats look great and the driver’s side one has memory features. The matching carpet is in similar shape while the headliner is in good, original order. The four-spoke steering wheel is in very good order and has an airbag. The instrumental panel is in good, original order and offers full instrumentation. The inner door panels look great but the glove box hinges are broke. The center console and shift lever are in better-than-average order. Rounding out the interior is a factory AM/FM stereo with seek and scan, six presets, cassette deck with auto reverse, seven-band graphic equalizer and six speakers.
First generation Mitsubishi models were internally designated Z16A and incorporated full-time four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, active aerodynamics with automatically adjusting front and rear spoilers, sport/tour exhaust modes and electronically controlled suspension (ECS). The Stealth featured pop-up headlights and articulated blister caps on the hood to accommodate the ECS controllers at the top of the strut turrets. The Dodge Stealth featured a signature cross-hair front bumper fascia and crescent-shaped rear spoiler — and did not include active aerodynamics. Mitsubishi models featured a front active air dam on 3000GT VR4, discontinued on later models.
The Stealth was noted for its transverse 3.0-liter, 24-valve V-6 engine (naturally aspirated or with twin-turbochargers), active aerodynamics (automatically adjusting front and rear spoilers), four-wheel-steering, full-time all-wheel-drive and adaptive suspension.
According to the Allpar.com website, the “Stealth was a potent vehicle, especially with the turbocharger but even without it; it was fast and handled well. The Stealth R/T Turbo could do 0-60 in under five seconds, a stunning time especially for the period. The all-wheel-drive must have helped, greatly reducing or eliminating wheelspin on launch.”
Competition to this Dodge in 1992 included Acura’s NSX, Aston Martin’s Virage, Chevrolet’s Corvette, Ferrari’s 348 TB, Honda’s Prelude, Mazda’s RX-7, Mitsubishi’s 3000GT, Nissan’s 300ZX, Porsche’s 911, Toyota’s Supra and Volkswagen’s Corrado.
